In the world of audience development, we often hear about email as a great way to target specific users and drive them back to your site. And while that is true, the process of collecting emails is - let's face it - not always easy. ☹️

One cannot simply send an email with a link or some other kind of call-to-action and hope for people to proactively register.

You need to make sure they give you their email address first.

Scraping helps you do just that by targeting and extracting relevant information from websites.

In this blog post, I'll teach you how to use scraping tools for audience development so that you can get all those sweet user emails.

What is email scraping?

When I say "email scraping," I mean the process of scraping websites to get email addresses.

This can be done in many ways depending on the information you're trying to scrape.

For example, if you are trying to find customer email addresses on a company's Help section, you can use free online tools to scrape that info.

However, if you're trying to scrape email addresses from a job site where contact info is hidden, you will need a different type of tool.

All these different types of scraping have in common that you have to write code that targets specific information and extracts it from a site.

Why Is Email Scraping Useful for Audience Development?

Let's say you have a new service for marketing agencies. You want to get that product in the hands of as many marketing agencies as possible, but you don't know where to start.

How do you find agencies to talk to? One way is to scrape websites that are most likely to contain the email addresses of agencies.

With this information, you can target these agencies directly with a personalized message. You can even send a message to multiple agencies at once by BCC'ing their email addresses.

This is a great way to get your product in front of your target audience quickly and with little effort.

Finding the Right Websites to Scrape

When it comes to scraping, you'll want to target websites with contact information (email addresses, phone numbers, etc.) that you can collect.

Ideally, these sites would also be top-rated, with a high traffic volume, so you can quickly collect many emails.

On top of that, these sites should also be relevant to your audience so you can easily send them to your product once you have their email.

There are many different places you can go for this information. You can go to forums and boards in your niche or even try scraping your industry's websites by targeting their support pages.

How to Find and Extract Email Addresses with Scraping

Now that we know what types of sites to target, let's talk about how to find and extract email addresses from those sites.

There are many tools that can help you do this. Using the Advanced search option, you can use a tool like BuzzSumo or Ahrefs to scrape contact info from a board or website.

Another excellent tool for this is Screaming Frog, which lets you scrape contact info from different sites and can even be used to scrape email addresses from a Help section.

Tools for email marketers

There are many tools that can help you scrape email addresses. Here are three of our favorites.

Ahrefs : This tool is excellent for scraping contact information from websites and forums. If you type the URL of a website into this tool and search for keywords, you'll be able to see the results for any email addresses associated with that website.

BuzzSumo : This tool can be helpful when scraping email addresses from a forum or website, but it can also be used to find contact info on a website. You can use the "Advanced" search option to find email addresses on a website. Select "Email" under "Find" and type in the website you want to search.

Octoparse : This tool is excellent for scraping email addresses from social media or a website's Help section. Just enter the URL of the site you want to scrape, and the tool will gather all the emails on the page.

Email scrapping platforms like Zoominfo, Skrapp.io, and Hunter.io.

Prospecting tools like Rocket Reach.

Wrapping Up
