How Mobile Shopping Habits Differ Around the World

Technology has changed how we shop, whether it’s in person or online. From delivery of items with drones to self-check-in at airports. Technology is playing an important role in the management of the interface between the seller and shopper.

Technology has reduced the level of attention required by shoppers thus improving the shopping experience. In the years to come, you should expect a surge in technologies that aim at replacing the roles people play in the supply chain, from the time the customer gets into contact with the product to the delivery of items to the buyer’s doorstep.

Technologies like mobile shopping have helped in improving communication with buyers and offering personalized services to shoppers to create many buying opportunities for consumers. Today, mobile commerce platforms operate in multiple international markets. Mobile commerce managers prioritize features that should be kept constant and adaptable to specific characteristics of global markets. For instance, to what extent should a mobile platform designed for Australian consumers be adapted to Brazil? Are the tastes and preferences of Australian consumers similar to those of Brazilian consumers?

When consumers use and interact with a mobile commerce platform, they form positive and negative perceptions of its characteristics based on value perceptions. Research studies have found that value perceptions fall under five categories in the world of e-commerce.

Five value categories

To understand this concept, imagine that Allan wants to invest in a new motorbike. He requests some individuals to research for him as he downloads the retail app (informational value). If he manages to find a good deal, the app will help him save money (monetary value).

Allan thanks his acquaintance for recommending the app. And now, they have a common subject to discuss (social value). Plus, Allan did not have to visit other retailers to decide where to buy (convenience value). Therefore, the app helped him manage his time effectively. Finally, Allan can cross off the new motorbike from his wish list (performance value).

These five value perceptions motivate users to use mobile commerce platforms. These motivations can either be utilitarian or hedonic. While some buyers use mobile platforms because they are fun and enjoyable, others use them because they are efficient and functional.

Value perceptions play an important role in explaining why consumers use mobile commerce platforms. Some use mobile commerce with an intentional nature in that they must consider whether using it helps them achieve a specific goal.

For instance, when consumers order food, they might need time to decide whether to call the restaurant directly or order from the app. On the other hand, others tend to use the mobile commerce platforms habitually in that they don’t have to think about what they are doing. For these consumers, using the app and ordering food happens automatically without consideration.

Appreciation of m-commerce

A recent survey found that close to 2000 consumers across several different countries enjoy using mobile commerce platforms as a source of social, informational, convenience, and performance value. It’s only consumers from Brazil and India who don’t seem to rely on mobile commerce because it helps them save time and money.

Consumers who use mobile commerce platforms can be different depending on their readiness stage. Everyone student has a close friend who is comfortable using proofreading service UK to complete their assignments. And buy products, pay their bills, and make reservations using their mobile phones. Interestingly, such consumers are more prevalent in developed nations such as United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Singapore.

Similarly, almost everyone has a friend who prefers doing things the old-fashioned way. They pay their bills and buy everything in-person. They might never own a smartphone in their lifetime. Such consumers are common in developing countries such as Pakistan, Brazil, Vietnam, and Bangladesh.

There are several differences between consumers in developed and developing nations. However, these differences vary. Consumers in developed countries use mobile commerce platforms because they are efficient, fun, and enjoyable.

Fun elements are essential

For consumers in developed countries, using mobile commerce platforms is an automatic process. Therefore, mobile commerce solutions with fun elements and innovative designs are preferable. Most mobile commerce-resistant shoppers are motivated by efficiency in developing countries. For them, m-commerce is functional and transactional.

Since mobile commerce platforms are not used by reluctant customers habitually, managers should always highlight their advantages. The motivations and perceptions of consumers in developing countries are shifting to become similar to those of developed countries.

Interactivity

The interactivity concept has changed the shopping experience of millions of people for several years now since touchscreens started to be used extensively. Several years later, touchscreen technology has become more reliable and sophisticated.

These changes have positively affected the shopper and seller. Interactivity has changed the shopping experience at grocery stores. Today, shoppers can check out their groceries without having to interact with a human. Interactive systems enable people to check-in for flights without having to interact with a person at every stage during the process.

Robotics augmented reality and virtual assistants in retail

Retailers are enhancing the buying experience through the use of augmented reality. And this has managed to create more selling opportunities. For instance, Charlotte uses the magic mirror in her store. This technology scans the faces of shoppers and virtually applies makeup.

This allows the shopper to see themselves at their best on-screen. Thus enabling them to choose their preferred products easily. This process eliminates several barriers that exist due to the nature of selling cosmetics. In most cases, customers are usually reluctant to try several products because they already have their makeup on.

The rise of robotics has delivered a massive impact on the shopping experience of millions of people. In the world of robotics, the US giant Best Buy is leading thanks to the introduction of robotic customer service assistants. Today, robots can be seen taking orders from online retailers and diners in different parts of the world. While the full extent of robotics remains unrealized in the retail world, it is clear that robots have boosted the interactions between buyers and sellers.

Several analysts have predicted that robots will continue assisting retailers in areas like restocking and warehousing. The introduction of automated assistants like Siri and Alexa has had a noticeable impact on shopper’s experience. Users can use this technology to surf the internet and find products and services available within a certain area based on the user’s preferences. Shoppers can also be guided on the best price and gather information like recommendations and reviews in seconds.

3D Printing Technology

3D Printers have transformed the shopping experience for most buyers. Today, customers can now order their preferred products from the creation point unlike in the past where consumers had to select from a wide range of products that have been developed and made. This development has improved the shopping experience and led to millions of successful sales.

Conclusion

Technology has changed how the majority of consumers’ shop. And more is expected to come in the future. As more retailers continue pumping money into newer technologies, you can expect customers to have a seamless buying process. Mobile shopping will continue changing peoples’ perceptions and boosting sales for retailers. Investing in newer technologies will pay off in spades in the long run.
