You can quickly and easily get your Alaska insurance license by using the information in this manual.

How to Obtain an Insurance License in Alaska?

An insurance license is easy to get in Alaska. Just follow the guidelines we've provided.

What Insurance Licenses Do You Need?

The initial step in earning your insurance license is choosing the licenses you need. The P&C, life, and health insurance licenses are the ones that brand-new insurance agents most frequently obtain. Which licenses you require will depend on the types of insurance policies and products you plan to market. With each license, you can market the following policy categories:

License for Property and Casualty Insurance - Home, Business, and Auto Insurance

Life and Health Insurance License - Health Insurance, Medicare, etc.

Although the majority of insurance producers and agents choose to earn both P&C and L&H licenses, you don't need to do so if you just intend to specialize in one field.

A separate license is needed for insurance adjusters.

Pre-License Education for Alaska Insurance License

Once you've decided on the licenses you need, it's time to start studying for the Alaska insurance exams.

Before taking the test in Alaska, you are not needed to earn a specified number of pre-license credits. This means that you are solely responsible for your exam preparation.

The majority of students opt to sign up for an online insurance pre-licensing course. These courses specifically provide the skills required to pass the test. Some people spend money on books or other resources for self-study.

The insurance exam comes after you've completed all of your pre-license coursework or self-study. You will take a separate exam for each insurance line you want to carry. In Alaska, the Life & Health (L&H) and Property & Casualty (P&C) lines are separate lines, so you must pass an exam for each line of authority you want to obtain. The lines are - Life, Accident & Health, Property, and Casualty.

Each exam attempt costs $89 in fees (one exam per line of authority). It is required that you bring a photo ID with you. Each exam consists of two portions. The General Section, which is the first section, consists of sixty (60) questions. To complete this part, you have exactly one hour and fifteen minutes. The second part of the exam is the State Section. This section, which has fifty (50) questions, must be completed in one (1) hour. The validity of exam results is one (1) year.

Background Check and Fingerprinting

The State of Alaska requires fingerprints from every applicant for an insurance license in order to provide the license. Providing your fingerprints will initiate a background check. Any prior felonies or misdemeanors may have an effect on the success of your licensing efforts. For further information, contact the License Department by email or by calling (907) 465-2515.

The cost of fingerprinting services is $48.25 plus a $15 processing fee, for a total cost of $63.25.

Make an appointment for your fingerprints to be taken with Pearson VUE or your neighborhood police department. You will be given a fingerprint card once your appointment for fingerprinting is complete. Keep track of your fingerprint card since you will eventually need to mail it in.

Application for License

You are now prepared to submit your license application after finishing your examinations and fingerprinting. After passing your license exam, you must allow seventy-two (72) hours for your license application to be processed. This will give the state enough time to receive the information from Pearson VUE. Make sure to submit applications for all of the lines of authority for which you have passed the exam.

A $75 online application cost plus a $5.60 transaction fee from NIPR makes a total of $80.60. Only when you apply for your additional lines of authority will you be charged the $5 transaction fee. Complete and submit your online application on the NIPR website.

Mail Fingerprint Card

After submitting your license application to the state, you will now mail in your fingerprint card. Send this card to the Juneau office.
