How Can We Judge a Life We've Never Had to Live?

Lately, I’ve realized that movies have been affecting me in ways I never expected.

Not in a bad way. They don’t make me lose touch with reality or influence me negatively. If anything, they’ve been opening something up inside me. They’ve been changing the way I look at people, situations, and the stories hidden beneath the surface.

The latest film to leave that kind of impact on me was Lilya 4-Ever.

It wasn’t just a movie I watched and moved on from. It stayed with me. It made me think about how easily we judge others, even when we know almost nothing about what they’ve been through.

The Tragic Story Behind Lilya 4-Ever

Lilya 4-Ever is not an easy film to sit through.

It’s heartbreaking, uncomfortable, and painfully realistic. The story follows Lilya, a young girl who has been abandoned by nearly everyone in her life. Her mother leaves her behind. Society ignores her. The people who should protect her simply aren’t there.

She grows up in a world that offers very little kindness and even fewer opportunities.

Watching her life unfold feels like watching someone struggle through circumstances they never chose. She spends most of her time trying to survive while hoping that somehow things might get better.

That hope becomes one of the few things she has left.

Why Do We Judge People So Quickly?

As I watched the film, I caught myself doing something that probably happens more often than I’d like to admit.

I judged her.

I remember thinking things like:

• Why would she do that?
• Why would she trust him?
• Why didn’t she just stay where she was?
• Why didn’t she make a different choice?

At first, those questions felt reasonable.

Then I stopped and thought about them more carefully.

A different question appeared in my mind:

What other choices did she actually have?

Are They Really Choices?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that what looked like a choice from the outside didn’t really feel like a choice at all.

It looked more like survival.

Lilya didn’t create the circumstances she was born into. She didn’t choose abandonment. She didn’t choose neglect. She didn’t choose a life where she had to carry burdens that no child should ever have to carry.

When she trusted someone who promised a better future, it wasn’t because she was foolish.

It was because she needed hope.

She needed something to believe in. She needed a reason to think life could become more than the pain she already knew.

And honestly, she never deserved any of what happened to her in the first place.

No one deserves to be abandoned, ignored, or treated as though their life matters less than everyone else's.

How Movies Reflect Real Life

That realization made me think about something beyond the movie itself.

Watching a film isn't all that different from observing people in real life.

When we watch fictional characters, we often judge them based on a limited view of their lives. We see their decisions, criticize them, and confidently decide what they should have done instead.

Yet we're only seeing the story from the perspective the movie gives us.

Real life works the same way.

We see a person make a decision, and suddenly we think we understand them.

We label them.

We criticize them.

We decide who they are.

All without knowing the full story.

The Danger of Seeing Only the Surface

Most of the time, we only see a small fragment of someone’s life.

We don't see the years of struggle behind a decision.

We don't see the disappointments, fears, losses, or circumstances that shaped them.

We see the outcome.

Then we build an opinion around that single moment.

Sometimes what looks like a mistake from the outside is actually someone doing their best with the options they have.

Sometimes what appears irresponsible, irrational, or wrong makes perfect sense when viewed from inside that person's reality.

The truth is that we often judge people based on what's on their plate without ever understanding the table they were given.

Sometimes Life Happens to People

One of the most powerful lessons I took from Lilya 4-Ever is that not everyone gets the same set of opportunities.

Some people aren't choosing between good and bad options.

They're choosing between difficult and worse.

And sometimes they aren't really choosing at all.

They're simply responding to circumstances they never asked for.

That doesn't excuse every action people take, but it does remind us to approach others with a little more understanding and a little less certainty.

What Lilya 4-Ever Changed in Me

I don't think this movie transformed me completely.

What it did was something smaller, yet perhaps more important.

It softened me.

It reminded me that the world is far more complicated than it appears at first glance.

It reminded me that every person carries a story I may never fully know.

And it reminded me that judging someone's life is easy when you've never had to walk the road they walked.

After watching Lilya 4-Ever, I came away with a simple realization:

People are often much more than the decisions we see.

Behind every action, there may be a story hidden from view—a story that explains far more than we realize.

And maybe that's why we should be slower to judge and quicker to understand.

Because we never truly know what options someone had when life asked them to choose.
