It's easier than ever to start a business. In fact, all you need is an internet connection and an electronic device. So if you've been thinking about starting your own business, there's no time like the present.

However, don't get bogged down by the idea that you need to rent office space, hire employees, and stock inventory. You can start small and grow your business over time. And there are many different types of business where you only need a minimal setup before you can launch.

In this post, I hope to open your mind to the possibilities available for you. I'll lay out the different types of businesses you can start and the basic tools you can use to make money.

There are a number of different ways to start a business. And I'll share my best tips that will help you explore entrepreneurship for yourself. Let's go!

Build the right attitude

The key to entrepreneurship is having the right attitude. First, don't limit yourself by believing that you can't start a business. Or that you need to have a large business for it to count.

As we'll see, thanks to modern tools and technologies anyone from SAHMs to students can make an income through selling.

Another belief that holds people back is that they have to be perfect at what they do or that they have to know everything. This isn't true, you can learn as you go. And you don't have to be an expert to provide value.

Be willing to learn

If you're not sure where to start, that's okay. The beauty of the internet is that you can learn anything you want to. You can find free courses, tutorials, and even entire businesses built around teaching people how to do things.

The key is to be open-minded and willing to learn. There's no shame in admitting that you don't know everything. We all have to start somewhere.

Find your niche

One of the best things you can do when starting a business is to find your niche. What are you passionate about? What do you know more about than most people?

Your niche doesn't have to be unique. But it should be something you're interested in and knowledgeable about. That way, providing value to others will come more easily to you.

Finding a niche is a double-edged sword. The best-case scenario is that you provide something so unique that people value it more. However, you can also back yourself into a corner if your business focus is too specific and you can't pivot to something new.

So, keep your mind open to more than one type of business or service and be prepared to pivot. This means creating different types of blog content, using different platforms like social media, blog platforms, or even offline ones.

What you need to start a business today

Let's get down to the practical aspect of starting a business. In short, you need to have a product or a service. You need an online presence. And you need to keep marketing yourself.

Keeping this in mind, here is a list of tools you can work with:

  • A website created with WordPress (free) and affordable hosting. You can use a shared hosting plan and even get a free business email to keep expenses down. WordPress has free themes that you can use to make your site look great.
  • A form tool. This could be something like WPForms, Google Forms, or something else. You can use forms to collect data from customers or to give people the ability to contact you. And even collect payments and sell things.
  • A social media presence. This is one of the most important aspects of marketing your business. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are free to use and can help you reach a large audience.
  • An email marketing service. This can be a tool like Constant Contact, MailChimp, and others. Some providers let you collect a few thousand contacts and send thousands of emails for free every month.
  • A free scheduling tool. You can use this to schedule appointments, calls, and other events. This can be a lifesaver when you're trying to juggle a lot of different tasks. And it's great for finding mutually convenient times for a meeting when you're working with clients around the world.
  • A payment processor. You'll need a way for customers to pay you. This could be something like PayPal, Stripe, Payoneer, or a number of other reliable platforms.
  • A design tool. If you're not a designer, no problem. You can use tools like Canva to create professional-looking designs without any design experience.
  • A blog and great blog content. A blog is a great way to share your story, connect with customers, and show you're an expert in your niche. This doesn't have to be perfect but you do have to provide value. The key is to provide free and useful information so that people find you online easily and reach out to you when they need your product.

These are some of the tools you'll need to get started. You can always work with more as you build your skills and experience.

Grow your business skills

No matter what field you're in, you need to know how to market to have a business. Here are a few things you should consider learning:

  • Content strategy. How to plan, create, and promote content that will reach your target audience.
  • SEO. How to optimize your website and content for the search engines so you can be found by more people.
  • Social media marketing. How to use social media platforms to reach more people and grow your business.
  • Email marketing. How to build an email list and send out campaigns that will get people to buy from you.
  • Cold emailing. How to reach out to potential customers and partners through email.
  • Cold calling. How to reach out to potential customers over the phone.
  • Conversion rate optimization. How to increase the percentage of people who take the desired action on your website, such as signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath. You don't have to know everything right away. All you need to do is take tiny steps forward and build your skills as you go.

Start taking action today

You don't need a lot of money or experience to start a business. All you need is the right attitude and the willingness to provide value.

The key is to be patient and keep working and over time you'll see results.
