How they did it

Todd Usher, owner and founder of Addison Homes, says it's starting to train trading partners the way the developer wants things done. This begins with framing and flashing. They used advanced framing, including insulated headers and plaster clips at two stud corners and wall crossings. The frame and seam were carefully sealed. Particular emphasis was placed on the ceiling as it was a ventilated ceiling. As part of this, the Usher plaster wall had glue glued to the top sheets.

The insulation was a combination of unattached fiberglass battens combined with continuous exterior insulation for the walls, along with loose fiber insulation in the ceiling (which incorporated a raised heel bar). It is worth noting the walls were 2x4, 16 '' in the middle, R-13 + 5 and the ceiling was R-38. In other words, they simply met the prescriptive levels of the 2012 IECC. They combined this with attention to detail and a team mentality towards air sealing that allowed the use of cost effective fiberglass insulation to meet the aggressive home performance target.

"Fiberglass works as well or better than any other form of insulation when installed properly and in enclosed cavities," says Usher. "We have found that good air sealing combined with the excellent performance and cost-effectiveness of fiberglass allows us to build some of the highest performance in our region."

Key recordings

There are really two that deserve special attention: Ambitious home performance goals can be achieved with a range of products, including fiberglass insulation, when used as part of a whole system approach and delivered through the care and teamwork of the developer and dealers.

Highly energy efficient homes make your customers your strongest promoters. In an industry where word of mouth is so crucial to success, it can be invaluable to provide homes that get people talking about you and the homes you build.

Produced homes to increase energy efficiency

With the aim of reducing energy consumption and increasing efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions, in June the US Department of Energy proposed the first new energy efficiency standard update for manufactured homes in more than 20 years. The changes will cumulatively reduce energy consumption by an estimated 30 percent over a 30-year period compared to the current standard and include a focus on thermal envelope / insulation as the basis for energy efficiency.

Getting Energy Smart

The DOE's proposed standards are based on the recommendations of its Working Group on Tasks, which began its work by examining the 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), the current code for built housing. The group recommended changes to make the proposed standards suitable for the manufacture of housing, including a consolidation of climate zones from eight to four.

In recognition of the importance of the thermal envelope in reducing energy consumption, the proposals also include two methods of solving this key element:

The prescriptive approach would require meeting criteria, including a specific R-value for wall, floor and ceiling insulation as a specific solar heat increase coefficient for windows

The performance method will set a maximum requirement for the building scale heat transfer or U-factor.
