About Him

Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) is an Indian cricketer who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket and for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is a right-handed batsman and occasional off-spin bowler.

Early Life

Though raised in Mumbai, Yadav's family has roots in Ghazipur and Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. His father migrated to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh, for job in the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. That time Yadav was 10 years old.

Later Surya joined Indian Railways as Locopilot in Gorakhpur region. Surya learnt the game while playing in the streets of Chembur.

At the age of 10, his father saw his inclination towards the game and enrolled him in a cricket camp in BARC colony in Anushakti Nagar. He then went to Elf Vengsarkar Academy of former international cricketer, Dilip Vengsarkar and played the age group cricket in Mumbai. He is an alumnus of Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science.

He made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2010-11 season and has represented the team in various domestic competitions since then. In the IPL, he made his debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2012 and has been a key player for the team. He was also selected in the Indian national cricket team in 2021.

Life Partner

On 7 July 2016 Yadav married Devisha Shetty. The couple first met in 2010 at a college programme. The couple soon became friends and later the friendship blossomed into love.

Shetty is also trained dancer and a dance coach.

T20 Format

SKY is known for his aggressive and powerful batting in the T20 format. He has a good T20 scoring record in domestic and international cricket. He has drawn comparisons to AB de Villiers, often considered as one of the greatest batsmen of all time.

As of 1 November 2022, Yadav was ranked as the number one T20 International batsman in the world surpassing both Babar Azam and Muhammed Rizwan, who strike at higher 120s. Meanwhile, Surya Yadav strikes at 180 while also having an average of 46.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he has a career batting average of over 30 and has scored over 1000 runs in the tournament. He has also scored several half-centuries and a century in the IPL.

In T20 Internationals, he made his debut for India in September 2021 and has played a few games so far. He has a good T20I scoring record, with an average of over 40, including a half-century in his debut match.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar called him the "new Mr 360-degree"

"There was that one shot that he hit for a six just to the left of the wicketkeeper," Gavaskar told India Today. "Then he went a little squarer in the final overs, for example, taking advantage of the angle that the bowler was trying to aim at. Then also played the lofted extra-cover drive, he has got every shot in the book. There was a straight drive as well."

"Surya scores 360 degrees around the ground, a bit like an AB de Villiers did when he was in his actual prime," Ponting had said. "The lap shots, the late cuts, you know, the ramps over the keeper's head. He can hit down the ground.

"He hits really well over the leg side, flicks to deep backward square particularly well, and he's a good player of fast bowling and is a good player of spin bowling."
