From Paris to the Pacific Northwest: How a Zillow Scroll Became a $500,000 Dream Home

One couple's whimsical house hunt across the Atlantic led to a viral renovation journey that would inspire thousands.

Becca Luna and her husband, Willow Kai, were traveling in Paris in 2023 when they decided to look at home listings back in the Pacific Northwest for the fun of it. It was then that they found a house listed on Zillow and were "immediately enthralled with its European charm and attention to detail."

"We were looking for a creative endeavor, one outside of our online ecosystem this time, and we had found it," the content creator, who sells digital business courses, shares with PEOPLE. "The following weekend, we did a sale in my business and did over $500,000 in just a few days, and this was our sign, and we used the money to put down and made our offer."

The decision to purchase the home was not made lightly, but the timing felt serendipitous. The couple had been searching for a project that would challenge them creatively in a new way, and the house seemed to call out to them from across the ocean. The fact that their business sale aligned perfectly with the opportunity only reinforced their belief that this was meant to be.

A Labor of Love and Patience

Since purchasing the home, Luna, 29, says they've "completely reimagined" the space. "We have taken it down to the studs in most rooms while leaving its charm, great original bones and solid materials like marble, wood that'd been milled from the property, and its incredible natural setting with mature landscaping," Luna shares.

Luna describes the property as her "dream house" and wanted to keep it a "whimsical dream" on the outside while still adding modern touches. "We brought the original stone work inside, casting an inside-outside feeling with hand-laid stone, redid the bathrooms, a full kitchen remodel, new floors and paint throughout the entire interior while leaving the exterior charm untouched," she shares.

The "most difficult part," however, was "the learning curve of working with contractors and tradesmen." "We manage a large team online, but working with construction men has proved to be an entirely new beast," she admits. "Timeline usually is a misunderstood concept, so patience has been the biggest learning for my husband and I."

The work has taken roughly 17 months to complete and, despite not having removed any major walls or structural components, she estimates the renovation cost to be $500,000. Still, Luna and her husband plan on doing even more work on the property, with their sights set on the two bathrooms. Luna shares that there are also "loads of ideas for projects throughout the property's wooded acreage."

The Cathedral Kitchen

She shares that her favorite part of the home is the kitchen, which the pair considers their "Cathedral," housing their formal living room and kitchen amidst 24-foot-tall vaulted ceilings and solid milled beams of cedar that "had been cut from the property and dried a few years before enacting the home." The kitchen has become the heart of the home, a space where the couple can gather, entertain, and appreciate the craftsmanship that went into its creation.

The kitchen's design is a testament to the couple's commitment to preserving the home's original character while updating it for modern living. The vaulted ceilings create a sense of grandeur, while the cedar beams add warmth and texture. The open layout allows for seamless flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas, making it ideal for both everyday living and hosting gatherings.

A Viral Journey

Luna has been documenting the process of renovating the home online through her TikTok account, a process that she says "has been quite interesting, actually." "It's been both rewarding, validating and at times, unpleasant," she admits. "I have a way with my words and sometimes enjoy 'riling people up' with satire and humorous takes on renovations that were 'planned' like replacing the solid wood with grey luxury vinyl plank flooring, or other 'horrendous' choices, which in return brings lots of opinions."

The couple's journey from Paris to the Pacific Northwest has captivated audiences, with Luna's renovation videos often going viral. Her willingness to share both the triumphs and the challenges of the process has resonated with viewers, many of whom have followed the couple's journey from the beginning.

After purchasing the home, Luna took a video and posted it online and it went viral. Ever since, she has continued posting about each update. "By the time we moved in, we knew it would be a new outlet for both our personal creativity and business growth," she shares. "Oddly, the audience the home's account has garnered has been a perfect match for our business, as we serve middle-aged women who are looking for a way to monetize their creativity and build their own 'dream life.'"

Luna and her husband have owned the house for three years, and almost every time she posts about it, the videos go viral. Despite dealing with her fair share of criticism, she loves her community and frequently has the chance to interact with them both online and offline. "Meeting other women who I've been able to inspire inspires me to continue to share and show girls that they can create something that others would call crazy, too."

The Lesson in the Journey

Luna's journey is a reminder that sometimes the best discoveries happen when we least expect them. A spontaneous Zillow scroll during a trip to Paris led to a transformative project that has not only reshaped a home but also inspired thousands. The couple's willingness to take a risk, embrace patience, and share their story has created a community of followers who are invested in their success.

The renovation has also been a lesson in resilience. The challenges of working with contractors, managing timelines, and dealing with public scrutiny have tested the couple's patience and creativity. But through it all, they have remained committed to their vision, using the process as an opportunity for growth both personally and professionally.

Becca Luna and Willow Kai's story is a testament to the power of following your instincts and embracing the unexpected. What started as a whimsical house hunt in Paris has become a labor of love, a viral sensation, and a source of inspiration for countless others. Their journey reminds us that sometimes the most meaningful projects are the ones that challenge us to grow, learn, and connect with others.

As Luna continues to document the transformation of her dream home, she is not just sharing a renovation she is sharing a dream. And in doing so, she is inspiring others to chase their own.
