Door signs provide consumers with an important orientation aid in everyday life, regardless of whether they are company signs, practice signs or signs within a building.

However, there are innovative ways for companies to design their door signs nowadays. A digital door sign, for example, has the advantage that the information on it can be flexibly adapted at any time.

The following article explains what information should generally be found on a door or company sign.

The necessary information on a company sign

In principle, companies are free to decide what information they want to publish on their company sign. Until some time ago, however, shop owners were still obliged to display a sign at their point of sale showing the first and last name. However, this requirement has no longer applied since March 2009.

It is important that all the information on the company sign is true and does not infringe the rights of competitors. However, a company sign does not otherwise have any legal significance, so that the door sign only serves to draw attention to the respective company and possibly to make it easier to find the way to the premises.

Companies can therefore decide for themselves which messages should be conveyed to customers and visitors through the door sign. In general, however, it is advisable to rely on the motto "less is more". The sign should therefore not be overloaded with too many details.

Of course, the information on the company sign must be true and not violate any rights of competitors. Legally, however, a company sign is insignificant; the sign merely draws attention to the existence of the company and, if necessary, points out the way to the premises. A legal relationship is not established by the display of a company sign. Therefore, it is not a business letter and does not need to contain all the information for it.

So decide for yourself what messages you want to convey to your visitors and customers on the company sign. As a general rule, it is better to have less than more. Do not overload your sign with too many details. Tasks of the company sign are: Company introduction, the first impression and providing the most important info. Detailed information can be placed in a company flyer.

Logo and company name

The sign of a company fulfils the task of introducing it, providing the most important information and contributing to a positive first impression. It is recommended that self-employed persons indicate the company name on their first and last name and company. To increase the recognition value, it is also a good idea to include the logo. This can take up a lot of space.

Focus and contact details

Meaningful keywords on the focus and the field of activity should also be mentioned. In this way, the door sign provides a certain amount of advertising and informs potentially interested parties about the offer. Information on contacts should not be omitted. If the office is closed, visitors can make a note of them.

As a rule, however, the address is not necessary, as this should be known to visitors. If the information is relevant for visitors, the opening hours or the indication that appointments can be made by appointment should also be given.

Directions and optional information

If the respective sign is not directly at the entrance of the office, it is also extremely helpful to provide hints such as "4th floor on the right" or "entrance around the corner" on the company sign.

Partnerships, memberships or certifications can also be mentioned. Although such information increases trust, it also takes up valuable space, which is why it should be carefully considered whether it can easily be placed on the door sign. To breathe more life into the company sign and to clarify the unique selling points, the sign can also be provided with the company motto or slogan.

It is important that the sign is designed according to the respective corporate identity and is of high quality. After all, it is a kind of business card that can greatly support a professional impression of the company.
