NEW YORK — Cyndi Lauper is turning back the clock to one of the most extraordinary evenings of her life, the night in January 1985 when she walked into the American Music Awards as a rising star and left as a double winner, before joining the greatest gathering of musical talent ever assembled for the recording of "We Are the World." Now, as she partners with Bonhams for "Cyndi Lauper: Suitcase of Memories," a two‑part auction featuring her iconic accessories and memorabilia, the 73‑year‑old is sharing the stories behind the style and the moments that defined a generation.

Two Wins Against Legends

Lauper didn’t just win that night; she triumphed over two of the most formidable artists in music history: Madonna and Tina Turner. “Madonna was still coming up. She just released her second record, and it was fantastic,” Lauper recalled. “I remember going up to her that night and saying, ‘Listen, that "Like a Virgin" track is incredible.’” Turner, too, was a force and Lauper admitted, “I don’t know that I knew I was up against her, but I was amazed that I won anyway.” Taking home Favorite Pop/Rock Female Video Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist confirmed her place at the forefront of pop’s bold new wave.

Performance Art on Primetime TV

What she remembers most vividly, however, is her performance of "When You Were Mine," a daring piece she describes as "living art." “I wanted everything to be black and white except for my hair and the paint that I was using,” she explained. That the vision made it to air on a Sunday night broadcast on ABC still astonishes her: “Dick Clark Productions let me do performance art… I was just buzzing about it.” The reaction from living rooms across the country? “What just happened?” It was bold, unforgettable, and unmistakably Cyndi.

Paint in Her Hair and "We Are the World"

The night was far from over when the awards wrapped. Directly afterward, music’s biggest names converged to record "We Are the World" and Lauper arrived exactly as she was. “I couldn’t wash my hair before… the paint was still in my hair, and it was flaking,” she laughed. “I realized ‘I should have taken the jewelry off.’ But I didn’t want to look like a plain Jane.” She stood alongside Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, and dozens more, awestruck by the scale of the moment.

Starstruck by Diana Ross

If there was one moment that took her breath away, it was seeing Diana Ross just a few feet away. “When I was little, I used to listen to Meet the Supremes over and over,” Lauper shared. “And then, there I am singing and there she is. You never think you’re going to grow up and be there.” It was a full‑circle moment that anchored the evening in pure, unfiltered gratitude.

Sharing the Memories

Now, those memories are moving from her closet to the world. "Cyndi Lauper: Suitcase of Memories" Part I live auction on October 22 in New York, and Part II online through October 23 features over 200 lots of fashion, jewelry, and keepsakes. “It’s better to share,” she said. “Remind older people about a time in the past… show younger people and inspire them to be creative.” For Lauper, music and style have always been inseparable and by letting these pieces go, she’s passing the torch to the next generation.

A Legacy That Inspires

From paint‑streaked hair to singing beside her childhood idols, Cyndi Lauper’s 1985 wasn’t just a night it was a promise: to be bold, to be kind, and to never let anyone dim your colours. Decades later, she’s still keeping it.
