Cristiano Ronaldo Laughs Off Wedding Chaos as Fans Crash Another Couple's Ceremony
The soccer star's reaction to the mistaken wedding frenzy was simple: five laughing emojis and a whole lot of amusement.

Cristiano Ronaldo is laughing off a wedding mix-up. The Portuguese soccer player, 41, was rumored to marry his fiancée, Georgina Rodríguez, 32, over the weekend in his hometown of Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira. As a result, hundreds of fans swarmed the Funchal Cathedral on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the hope of seeing Ronaldo and Rodríguez tie the knot, but they ended up crashing the wrong wedding.
The gathered masses packed in the center of Funchal were left disappointed after mistaking another couple's wedding for Ronaldo's. A photo and video of people crammed in the streets with their phones and cameras held aloft were shared by local newspaper JM Madeira on Instagram. Ronaldo reacted to the confused wedding onlookers in the comments section with a simple: "🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣."
The droves of fans, young and old, eventually realized their error when the bride arrived. It was clearly not Rodríguez, and was revealed by Funchal Cathedral to be a woman named Nicole. The groom, Fábio, was waiting for her at the altar inside.
"Many congratulations to the couple Nicole and Fábio. After a lot of confusion on the street with so many journalists and tourists, we finally managed to close the church and celebrate," the cathedral wrote on Facebook alongside wedding photos.
"We've Never Seen Anything Like This"
In a second Facebook post, the cathedral shared more photos of the crowd surrounding Nicole as she made her grand entrance, writing, "We've never seen anything like this here at the Cathedral. It was very difficult for the bride to enter the Cathedral to get married." The chaos was so intense that the actual wedding guests had to navigate through a sea of Ronaldo fans, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the soccer legend.
Although false reports drew fans to a different wedding entirely, some of Nicole and Fábio's actual wedding guests found the chaos just as hilarious as Ronaldo did. "We feel famous," one guest joked to local news outlet Diario de Noticias da Madeira. "I find it impressive that these people think Ronaldo would get married today without security."
They added that the moment will "certainly go down in history," a sentiment that seems certain given the viral nature of the event.
The Ronaldo-Rodríguez Love Story
Neither Ronaldo nor Rodríguez have confirmed their wedding date. The couple announced their engagement on Instagram on Aug. 11, 2025, with a simple yet heartfelt post that sent fans into a frenzy. The pair have been in a relationship for nearly a decade, having made their first public appearance as a couple in early 2017.
The soon-to-be groom and bride share five children: twins Eva Maria and Mateo, 9, daughter Alana, 8, daughter Bella, 4, and 16-year-old son Cristiano Jr., whom Ronaldo welcomed in a previous relationship. He and Rodríguez previously announced the death of Bella's newborn twin brother, Ángel, in April 2022, a loss that brought the family even closer together.
Ronaldo and Rodríguez have built a life together that spans continents, with the family often splitting their time between Portugal, Saudi Arabia, where Ronaldo currently plays for Al Nassr and other global locations. Their relationship has been a subject of fascination for fans around the world, and any hint of a wedding is enough to send the rumor mill into overdrive.
A History of Wedding Rumors
This isn't the first time Ronaldo's wedding plans have sparked public interest. In fact, speculation about the couple's nuptials has been a recurring theme since their engagement announcement. From reports of a lavish ceremony to details about guest lists and venues, fans and media have been eager to learn when the couple will finally tie the knot.
This isn't the first time Ronaldo has been at the center of a wedding mix-up. The soccer star is no stranger to public attention, and his status as one of the world's most recognizable athletes means that even his personal milestones, including his wedding, become global events. The Funchal Cathedral wedding mix-up is a testament to the enduring fascination with Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez. Whether fans are gathering in droves to catch a glimpse of the couple or eagerly awaiting news of their wedding date, the public's interest shows no signs of waning.
For Ronaldo, the incident was a moment of levity a chance to laugh at the chaos that surrounds his life. For the couple Nicole and Fábio, it was a wedding day they will never forget, complete with unexpected fame and a story that will be told for years to come.
As for Ronaldo and Rodríguez, their wedding date remains a mystery. But when it does happen, it's safe to say that the world will be watching.
