Is Cristiano Ronaldo ready to retire from soccer?

The sports legend, 41, hinted at retirement in a Vogue interview published on Sunday, August 16, sending shockwaves through the football world. "This is probably my last year of [soccer], and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo told the outlet.

The interview took place just five days before he and his longtime partner, Georgina Rodríguez, secretly tied the knot. Elsewhere in the conversation, Ronaldo teased what his life after soccer could look like, offering fans a glimpse into his carefully mapped-out future.

"I have my future all mapped out," the father of five said. "I have so many things to keep me busy, that to tell you just one thing is hard."

The Portuguese superstar acknowledged that stepping away from the sport he has dominated for over two decades will not be easy. "Because [soccer] could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one," Ronaldo explained. "And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I've earned, what we've earned."

He added, reflectively, "Because after all, it's been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."

Ronaldo's contract with Al Nassr, the Saudi Arabian professional sports club he joined in 2023, expires in June 2027. However, his comments suggest he may step away from the game sooner than that. PEOPLE reached out to Al Nassr for comment on Sunday, August 16, but did not immediately hear back.

The football icon made his senior team debut with Sporting CP in 2002, launching a career that would see him become one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. He went on to play for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, amassing an unprecedented collection of trophies, records, and individual accolades along the way.

Ronaldo's five Ballon d'Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, and status as the all-time leading goalscorer in men's international football are just a few of the highlights of a career that has spanned nearly a quarter of a century. His move to Al Nassr in 2023 marked a new chapter, bringing global attention to the Saudi Pro League and further cementing his status as a global sporting icon.

The retirement speculation comes just weeks after Ronaldo announced that the 2026 World Cup would mark his final year participating in the tournament. "It's about enjoying it as much as possible," he said at the time, per ESPN. "This will be my last World Cup, but let's hope tomorrow isn't my last game."

The 2026 World Cup, held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marked Ronaldo's sixth appearance in the tournament, an extraordinary achievement that underscores his longevity and enduring excellence. Reflecting on his international career, he added, "The day will come [when I retire from international soccer]. But I'll be honest. Whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience, not 100%, but 1,000%. Because I've given everything in [soccer]."

Ronaldo's legacy extends far beyond the pitch. He is one of the most recognizable and marketable athletes in history, with a massive global following across social media platforms. His influence has transcended the sport, making him a cultural phenomenon and a role model for aspiring athletes worldwide.

As the football world processes the possibility of Ronaldo's retirement, fans and pundits alike are beginning to reflect on his extraordinary career. From his early days at Sporting CP to his record-breaking stints at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, Ronaldo has consistently redefined what is possible on a football pitch. His relentless work ethic, unparalleled athleticism, and insatiable desire to win have inspired countless players and captivated audiences for generations.

Now, as he contemplates the next chapter of his life, Ronaldo appears focused on leaving a lasting impact. Whether it's through his business ventures, his family, or his continued involvement in the sport, one thing is certain: Cristiano Ronaldo's legacy will endure long after he plays his final match.

"After all, it's been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice," he said. For a man who has given so much to the game, the world will be watching closely to see what comes next.
