Companies and their unreasonable standards

I can’t put into words how irritated I am whenever I request a vacation (which isn’t very often) and they question if I really want to take time off. Shocker of the century, people have limits. Everyone needs a break from their job or life sometimes and that’s not a bad thing at all. At the company I am currently employed at, management will twist themselves into knots over someone leaving fifteen minutes early. I’m sorry but it’s just insane.

The most recent update for my job is that after over two years of asking for hybrid work, we finally get one day a week where we can work from home. However, management has been freaking out over whether we’re productive or not. I’ll just say this about my job: it’s not that important. It is not a job where you are saving lives or firing off missiles. It is simply an office job where we do the exact same thing over and over again. There is nothing overly exciting or interesting about what we do. That’s just the truth.

However, management is incredibly concerned with standards and people only taking a 15 minute break rather than an 18 minute one. If we take over a half hour for lunch, we are scrutinized and our behavior is potentially escalated to the point of termination. Such a shame that this focus isn’t on the multiple HR nightmares that have graced my office. In 2024, there was an employee who stalked multiple fellow employees to the point of resignation. Senior management provided their incompetence by refusing to fire him. It took almost a dozen people including myself rehashing our uncomfortable and inappropriate experiences with this person to get rid of him.

Other people who were friends with managers were allowed to get away with horrendous behavior towards other employees, abused their lunch and break times, and made little effort to actually work throughout the day. One person was incredibly rude and almost violent towards multiple managers and he was never removed. He continued to terrorize his coworkers including me without any consequences. Management should’ve gotten rid of him the second he started being disrespectful but that sadly didn’t happen because they were afraid of him.

Another massive issue with my current company is the lack of flexibility concerning vacations. Having five days of PTO barely changes anything. There are 365 days in a year. How come we’re penalized if we want to take a few days more off a year? It doesn’t make any sense. Most companies give at least two weeks of PTO as a minimum. Here, we didn’t even have any at all. Taking a two week vacation comes with a great deal of scrutiny, judgment, and unnecessary criticism. People are supposed to take time off of work. That doesn’t stop just because this company sucks.

Whenever people ask me why I’m so unhappy with my job, I just list out the various issues that I’ve experienced during my time here. This has not been an optimal experience for me nor most people who work here. The absurdity of some of these rules and regulations at my company cannot be exaggerated. They truly are just infuriating. I hate knowing that all of this is true and that offices are this toxic. I didn’t expect the corporate world that I’m in to be this juvenile and unreasonable.

When I leave this job, whether that’s next week or next month or next year, I will be more than happy to give two middle fingers to this workplace and it’s shit pile of issues. That’s just what I had to say.
