Chevrolet Takata Airbag Recall For Cruze, Orlando, Sonic, Trax
Service Work Conducted At Honda Malaysia Centres Until End-2026

A long-running safety recall affecting certain Chevrolet and Saab models in Malaysia is entering its final phase, with authorities issuing a renewed reminder to owners to bring their vehicles in for inspection and replacement before the local support arrangement expires in December 2026. The campaign addresses potentially dangerous Takata airbag inflators, which pose a risk of rupture over time due to environmental exposure.
Background of the Recall
The recall was first launched around mid-2022, covering a total of 3,725 units of Chevrolet and Saab vehicles sold in Malaysia. A follow-up reminder was sent out in 2023, and now Chevrolet Sales Thailand (CST), which manages service and recall matters for the Malaysian market following the brand’s withdrawal from local operations, has issued another urgent notice to ensure as many owners as possible take action.
According to CST, the response rate since the campaign began has been lower than expected. One of the main challenges faced is tracing the current owners of these vehicles, as many have changed hands over the years, resulting in outdated or incomplete contact details in the company’s records. This latest outreach is therefore designed to reach as many current users as possible before the local service arrangement comes to an end.
Final Deadline: December 2026
In its official statement, CST emphasised that this is the final opportunity for owners to have the defective airbag inflators replaced free of charge within Malaysia. The current agreement with a local partner will remain valid only until 31 December 2026.
After this date, owners who have not yet completed the safety work will no longer be able to do so locally. Instead, they will have to travel to designated service centres in neighbouring countries:
Singapore: Alpine Motors
Thailand: Autosales, located in Yala province
While the replacement will remain free of charge globally, the travel and logistical costs will fall entirely on the vehicle owner, making it far more convenient and cost-effective to complete the work before the deadline.
Which Models Are Affected?
The recall applies to the following vehicles registered in Malaysia:
Chevrolet Cruze: Model years 2010 to 2015
Chevrolet Orlando: Model years 2013 to 2015
Chevrolet Sonic: Model years 2013 to 2014
Chevrolet Trax: Model year 2017
Saab 9-3: Model year 2007
Understanding the Risk
The affected vehicles are fitted with driver-side airbag inflators that use non-desiccated phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) as the propellant. Over time, and especially when exposed to Malaysia’s hot, humid climate with constant cycles of high temperatures and strong sunlight, the chemical composition of the propellant can degrade and change.
When this happens, the inflator may generate more gas than it is designed to safely contain and vent during deployment. This can cause internal pressure to build up rapidly, potentially exceeding the structural strength of the metal housing. In worst-case scenarios, the inflator can rupture upon activation, sending metal fragments flying toward the driver and increasing the risk of serious injury or even death in the event of a collision.
This defect has been the subject of one of the most extensive automotive safety recalls worldwide, affecting millions of vehicles across dozens of brands.
Service Arrangement in Malaysia
Since Chevrolet no longer maintains its own dealership network in Malaysia, the recall work is being carried out in partnership with Honda Malaysia (HMSB). Selected authorised Honda service centres across the country have been trained and equipped to perform the inspection and replacement of the Takata inflators.
Owners are advised to contact their nearest participating Honda outlet to schedule an appointment. The entire process is free of charge, including parts and labour, and typically takes only a short time to complete.
How to Check and Proceed
For full details, a list of participating Honda service centres, and to confirm if a specific vehicle is part of the recall, owners can visit the official CST recall website, which will remain accessible even after December 2026. The site also provides updated contact information for assistance and instructions on how to proceed should the work need to be done overseas after the local deadline.
CST and Honda Malaysia urge all owners of the affected models not to delay. “Safety is our top priority, and we strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this final local service period before it is too late,” the statement concluded.
