Celebrating Social Impact While Bolstering Defence and Resources
As four women are honored for their transformative contributions to community and industry, South Australia simultaneously cements its status as a national powerhouse in defence innovation and critical mineral exports, signaling a period of robust economic and social progress.

South Australia is experiencing a moment of dual momentum, balancing significant social recognition with substantial economic growth. This week, the state celebrated the achievements of four outstanding women at the 2026 SA Women of Impact Awards, held at Government House. Simultaneously, the government announced major expansions in defence research funding, record-breaking copper exports, and strategic advances in rare earths processing, underscoring the state’s evolving role in both social equity and national security.
Champions of Change: The 2026 SA Women of Impact
The annual awards recognized individuals who have driven meaningful change across various sectors. Susan Dixon, a Kaurna and Narungga woman with over four decades of advocacy experience, received the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Impact Award for her relentless work in Aboriginal education, health, housing, and women’s rights. Her award highlights the ongoing importance of indigenous leadership in shaping equitable policies.
Dr. Marie-Claire Seely, founder of the Australian POTS Foundation, was honored with the Impact in the Community Award. Her dedication to improving the lives of those suffering from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) has brought visibility and support to an often-misunderstood condition. Stacy Nelan, a survivor advocate, received the Impact on Ending Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Award, recognizing her twelve years of work amplifying the voices of survivors and pushing for systemic change. Finally, Jane Pickering, CEO of Eldercare Australia, took home the Impact in Industry Award for her 48-year career in health and aged care, where she has been a pivotal figure in advancing gender equity and women’s representation in leadership roles.
Minister for Women Katrine Hildyard praised the recipients, stating, “These women’s stories and efforts are remarkable and will inspire others.” Their recognition serves as a reminder that social progress is driven by individual commitment and sustained advocacy.
Strategic Investment in Defence Innovation
On the economic front, South Australia is deepening its ties with the national defence sector through a $10 million expansion of the Defence Innovation Partnership (DIP). The funding, to be invested over four years, aims to strengthen collaboration between universities, defence agencies, and private industry. The expansion includes three key programs:
The Activator Fund: Providing $1.6 million per round for research and development projects.
The Collaborator Fund: Offering up to $400,000 per project for research in high-priority areas such as artificial intelligence, space-based advanced threat warning, and information resilience.
The Connector Fund: Set to launch in early 2027, this program will facilitate partnerships between South Australian organizations and international collaborators.
Sumen Rai, Director of the Defence Innovation Partnership, emphasized the initiative’s value: “The Defence Innovation Partnership provides a proven pathway for defence, researchers and industry to work together on complex challenges and develop solutions with a clear pathway to impact.” This investment positions Adelaide as a hub for next-generation defence technology, leveraging the state’s strong academic and industrial base.
Record-Breaking Copper Exports and Rare Earths Progress
South Australia’s resources sector continues to deliver strong results, with copper exports reaching a record $5.57 billion in the year to July 2026. This figure surpasses the previous record of $5.3 billion set in the 2025-26 financial year, reflecting the growing global demand for critical minerals. The announcement coincided with the Copper to the World conference in Adelaide, which drew over 600 delegates from around the globe.
Energy and Mining Minister Tom Koutsantonis noted, “Another record in copper exports is a powerful signal that South Australia’s copper story is not just about future potential; it is delivering for our economy right now.” With two-thirds of Australia’s known copper resources located in the state, South Australia remains central to the nation’s mining output.
In parallel, Australian Rare Earths has advanced its processing pilot to the next phase, marking a significant milestone in the production of concentrated intermediate rare earth products. CEO Travis Beinke confirmed that the company has successfully established rare earth recovery through heap leaching and is now validating downstream processing methods. This progress is crucial for Australia’s goal of establishing a sovereign supply chain for rare earths, which are essential for electronics, renewable energy technologies, and defence applications.
Commercial Confidence and Tourism Consolidation
Investor confidence in South Australia’s commercial assets remains strong, evidenced by the recent sale of a 500-bay, multi-deck car park in Adelaide’s CBD. The seven-level facility at 90-100 Grenfell Street was purchased by a consortium of local investors, including Ryan Mills and Max Frohlich of Knight Frank, and Ian Thomas and Alistair Laycock of CBRE. The sale, achieved at a premium to book value, reflects the robust demand for low-risk commercial properties in the city center.
In the tourism sector, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has approved the $161 million sale of Kelsian’s tourism portfolio to Journey Beyond. This regulatory green light paves the way for the transaction to proceed in the current financial half, consolidating Journey Beyond’s position as a major player in the Australian tourism landscape.
From honoring social champions to investing in future technologies and recording historic export figures, South Australia is demonstrating a balanced approach to growth. By fostering both social equity and economic resilience, the state is building a foundation for sustainable long-term prosperity.
