Bret Michaels Postpones All 2026 Shows to Focus on Recovery After Kidney Stone Surgery
The Poison frontman attempted a comeback show in Georgia, but doctors determined he still needs "a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery," complicated by his lifelong Type 1 Diabetes.

Bret Michaels will be taking the rest of the year off as he continues to recover from his kidney stone surgeries. The 63-year-old Poison frontman took the stage in Sugar Hill, Georgia, on Friday, August 21, for his first show back after a series of postponements in the wake of the recent procedures. The return was short-lived, however, as the musician announced the following morning that he will be taking off the remainder of the year, citing doctors' orders.
A Comeback Cut Short
"Following Bret Michaels' comeback show at The Bowl at Sugar Hill, doctors and paramedics determined immediately after the show that he still needs additional rest and recovery from his recent surgeries," the musician's company, Michaels Entertainment Group, said in a statement shared on Facebook on Saturday, August 22. The musician, who was set to perform at Mountain Music Festival on Saturday, August 22, "will be taking the next several months off to heal and get back to 100%," the statement said.
Saturday's post also included a statement from Bret's doctors, Dr. Abby Borhan and Dr. Patel, who said the "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" singer needs a "much-needed period of rest and slow recovery." "We will be pulling Bret off the road for the time being," the doctors' statement said. "He wanted to attempt this show, but we feel there is a much-needed period of rest and slow recovery ahead, especially considering the heat and humidity during the summer months and the effect it can have on his blood sugar levels."
The Medical Journey
Michaels' return came after he took several weeks to recuperate until a stent was removed following an "immediate complicated obstructing kidney stone surgery." He underwent the procedure after experiencing "severe kidney pain" during a Washington show on July 18. Michaels first revealed that he underwent surgery to have a kidney stone removed after enduring the pain for three performances on July 22.
In the statement, Michaels' company offered its "deepest apologies," stating that "we were truly looking forward to the rest of this year's shows, including The Mountain Music Festival, private events and all the great shows coming up." "We now look ahead to Bret being able to return healthy, strong and ready to rock," the statement concluded.
The Complication of Type 1 Diabetes
As his weeks-long break was announced on July 27, one of Michaels' doctors noted that the rocker's recovery is complicated by his "underlying health factors," including his lifelong Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. "Because Type 1 Diabetes inherently compromises the immune system and impairs healing, he faces an exceptionally high risk of contracting a serious UTI or developing urosepsis, a blood infection, until the stent is removed," Borhan said at the time. "The demanding nature of a high-intensity tour schedule makes it impossible to maintain the sterile environments, strict hydration schedules, frequent rest, and precise blood glucose management required for his safe recovery."
Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. It requires careful management, including monitoring blood sugar levels, administering insulin, and maintaining a strict diet and exercise regimen. For a performer like Michaels, who is known for his high-energy stage presence and demanding tour schedule, managing the condition while recovering from surgery adds layer of complexity.
A History of Health Challenges
This is not the first time Michaels has faced serious health challenges. The rocker has a history of health issues, including a brain hemorrhage in 2010 and a previous kidney stone surgery. Despite these setbacks, Michaels has continued to perform and tour, driven by his passion for music and his dedication to his fans.
In a previous interview, Michaels reflected on his health journey and his determination to keep going. "I still got a lot of life to live," he said, emphasizing his commitment to his music and his family. His resilience in the face of adversity has earned him the respect and admiration of fans and fellow musicians alike.
The Announcement
The announcement that Michaels will be taking the rest of 2026 off comes just one day after Michaels said he was ready to return to the stage following his "medical situation" in a Friday post. In the post, the Poison frontman said, "I am so excited for my first show back tonight since the medical situation after Spokane and then several other incidents." "For the first time ever, and after the recent surgery, I may be wearing the infamous black travel rock 'n' roll sweatpants 🎸," he continued in the same post. "But I will be giving 100% of everything I've got! If all goes well, I can't wait for the The Mountain Music Festival tomorrow."
Looking Ahead
At the time of his initial announcement, Michaels said he was "forever grateful for the amazing medical treatment and ongoing medical attention throughout my personal life and career, and truly grateful for family, friends, fans, band, crew and promoters for their understanding and, if all goes well, will hit the road late August back to delivering 1000% energy, intensity and truly nothing but a good time."
While the postponement of his shows is disappointing for fans, Michaels' health is the top priority. His decision to take time off to recover is a wise one, and his fans will undoubtedly support him as he focuses on his recovery.
A Message of Support
Fans and fellow musicians have expressed their support for Michaels, wishing him a speedy recovery. His resilience and determination have inspired countless people, and his commitment to his health and his music is a testament to his character.
As Michaels takes the rest of the year off to heal, his fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to the stage. In the meantime, they can continue to enjoy his music and send their well-wishes as he focuses on getting back to 100%.
