Brandon Clarke's Cause of Death Revealed: Grizzlies Star's Tragic Passing Linked to Heroin and Cocaine
The medical examiner has ruled the 29-year-old's death an accident, confirming the presence of heroin and cocaine in his system.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death for Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, who passed away unexpectedly in May at the age of 29. The medical examiner ruled that Clarke's death was accidental, citing "the effects of heroin and cocaine" as the cause.
"The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner (DME) determined the cause and manner of death for 29-year-old professional basketball player Brandon Clarke as the effects of heroin and cocaine," the office said in a statement on Friday, Aug. 7. "The manner of death is accident."
The announcement brings a somber conclusion to months of speculation following the athlete's sudden passing. Paramedics found Clarke unresponsive in his bedroom on May 11, the DME said in the statement, and pronounced him dead 15 minutes after they arrived at 5 p.m. One day later, a medical examiner examined him to determine his cause of death, which was not certified until Friday.
The Final Day
Shortly after news of Clarke's death broke, NBC4 in Los Angeles reported that authorities were investigating his death as a possible overdose. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) had pronounced him dead shortly after 5 p.m. on May 11 after they received a 911 call to a home in the San Fernando Valley. Drug paraphernalia was found at the scene, the station reported.
Clarke's sudden passing sent shockwaves through the NBA community. The 29-year-old was in the prime of his career, having established himself as a key contributor for the Grizzlies since being drafted in 2019. His journey had been marked by resilience and dedication, but the circumstances of his death revealed a private struggle that few knew about.
A Life and Career Cut Short
Clarke was the 21st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, initially selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to the Grizzlies weeks later. He quickly became a fan favorite in Memphis, known for his high-energy play, defensive versatility, and incredible athleticism. His ability to elevate for chase-down blocks and thunderous dunks made him a highlight-reel fixture throughout his career.
The forward's professional trajectory was interrupted by a season-ending injury in December 2025, when he sustained a Grade 2 right calf strain in the first quarter of the Grizzlies' home game against the Washington Wizards. The injury marked a challenging period for Clarke, who had previously missed significant time with an Achilles injury in 2023.
In April, just weeks before his death, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas and faced multiple charges, including speeding and drug possession, according to online jail records. The arrest offered a glimpse of the personal battles he was facing away from the court.
Tributes from Team and Agency
Clarke's agency, Priority Sports, shared the news of his death in a Tuesday, May 12 statement on social media, expressing profound grief over the loss.
"We are all beyond devastated by the passing of Brandon Clarke. He was so loved by all of us here and everyone whose life he touched. He was the gentlest soul who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family," the statement said.
"Our hearts are so broken as we think about his mom, Whitney, his entire family, and his friends and teammates. From high school to San Jose State to Gonzaga to the Grizzlies, Brandon impacted everyone who was part of his life. Everyone loved BC because he was always there as the most supportive friend you could ever imagine. He was so unique in the joy he brought to all of those in his life."
The statement concluded with a heartfelt farewell: "It's just impossible to put into words how much he'll be missed. We love you, BC."
The Memphis Grizzlies also paid tribute to Clarke in a statement on social media, honoring his contributions to the organization and the community.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke. Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten," the statement said. "We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
A Legacy Beyond the Court
Clarke's journey to the NBA was one of perseverance and determination. He played college basketball at San Jose State before transferring to Gonzaga, where he emerged as one of the nation's top players. His senior season at Gonzaga was nothing short of spectacular, as he averaged 16.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game while shooting 68.7% from the field. He was named a Consensus All-American and was a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award.
His transition to the NBA was seamless. In his rookie season, Clarke averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds, earning All-Rookie Second Team honors. His combination of size, athleticism, and basketball IQ made him a valuable asset for the Grizzlies, who had built a young, exciting core around Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.
Off the court, Clarke was known for his humility and kindness. Teammates and coaches often spoke of his positive energy and his willingness to do whatever was needed to help the team succeed. His impact on the Memphis community extended beyond basketball, as he participated in numerous charitable events and youth programs.
The Fight Against Substance Abuse
Clarke's tragic passing highlights the ongoing battle against substance abuse, a crisis that affects individuals across all walks of life, including professional athletes. The pressures of professional sports the physical toll, the mental strain, the constant travel can create an environment where individuals turn to substances as a coping mechanism.
The NBA has a comprehensive anti-drug program designed to support players struggling with substance abuse, but the stigma surrounding addiction often prevents individuals from seeking help. Clarke's story serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health support and addiction resources within the sports community.
As the Grizzlies and the NBA community continue to mourn the loss of Brandon Clarke, his legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the example he set on the court. His journey from collegiate standout to NBA contributor was a testament to his hard work and determination.
The medical examiner's determination provides a measure of closure for Clarke's family, friends, and fans. But for those who knew him best, the loss remains profound. The circus of professional sports continues to move forward, but the memory of Brandon Clarke will endure.
