Ben Affleck on Grief, Time, and What Remains After Loss
Losing Both Parents Within Two Months Honouring His Mother, Facing His Father "We Only Get So Much Time" Grief Beyond the Neat Endings of Hollywood

In a candid new interview with GQ published October 6, 2026, Ben Affleck has spoken openly about the profound impact of losing both of his parents within just two months, a loss that has reshaped how he sees his past, his present, and the time he has left. At 54, he reflects on what it means to confront mortality, to honour a beloved mother, and to find peace with a complicated relationship with his father.
A Year of Loss
The losses came close together. Affleck and his brother Casey announced the passing of their mother, Chris Affleck, on June 2; she was 83. Then, in September, Casey revealed that their father, Timothy Affleck, had died earlier in the year, in April. The news was shared during the Venice Film Festival, where Casey dedicated his new film, Company, to both parents.
“It’s a big year of life,” Ben told GQ. “My brother and I, our parents died just two months apart, beginning of April and June. That’s a lot, man.” The experience has stirred deep reflection on childhood, upbringing, and the fragility of every life. “You see things differently, you appreciate your parents in different ways, and you think about your own mortality and your own life and your own children and what you want to do with it,” he said. “The bare fact of the very fleeting nature of all of our lives kind of stares you back in the face. And you realise, yeah, we only get so much time.”
Chris Affleck: Extraordinary, Brave, and Unforgettable
Affleck speaks of his mother with admiration and gratitude. A former public school teacher and civil rights activist, she was a woman of principle and warmth who shaped his values from the start. “She was pretty extraordinary and brave,” he said. “She’s an amazing woman and her death really did cause me to even more deeply and fully appreciate her and her life.” Losing her has been painful, yet he finds a quiet, grounding perspective: “It is horrible, but it’s not tragic… This is normal. I certainly don’t want to outlive my children. That would be the worst thing I could imagine. So this is the way it’s supposed to go, but it’s still really sad for me.”
Timothy Affleck: A Complicated Relationship
With his father, the experience was different. Timothy, an aspiring playwright who worked various jobs and struggled with alcoholism, divorced Chris when Ben was still a child. “I had a complicated relationship with him,” Affleck acknowledged. “Not a very close one for the last few years of his life.” He chose not to go into further detail publicly, respecting the complexity of their bond. Yet even so, his father’s passing brings its own weight the realisation that unresolved things remain unresolved, and that life does not always offer the tidy closure seen in films.
Life Does Not Conform to Hollywood Endings
That contrast between the stories we watch on screen and the messiness of real loss struck him deeply. “Often the end of life isn’t full of wisdom and resolve,” he observed. “Stuff you haven’t fixed in life stays unfixed.” Grief does not always tie things together neatly; sometimes it leaves loose ends, quiet questions, and memories that do not fit into a single narrative. And in that honesty, he says, there is a kind of clarity: “Okay, how do I want to spend the rest of this time? Because you realise there’s not all that much of it.”
Affleck is preparing for the release of his new film Animals, which arrives in select theatres and begins streaming on Netflix on October 9. Amid professional milestones, he carries these lessons forward cherishing what he has, valuing the people who matter most, and accepting that time is precious and finite. He does not have all the answers, and there is no perfect way to grieve. But there is gratitude for a mother who gave so much, for a life that has shaped him, and for the chance to make the most of every remaining day.
