Anna Faris Jokes There's "No Time" for Female Friendships Amid Parenting and Career

The Spa Weekend star, who coparents her son with ex-husband Chris Pratt, says she's told her friends: "Can I hang out with you in a decade when the kid graduates?"

Anna Faris is fantasizing about a weekend getaway. The star of female ensemble comedy Spa Weekend (in theaters now), costarring Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, and Michelle Buteau, jokes to PEOPLE that "there's no time" for a social life amid a thriving movie career and parenting her son, Jack.

"We're at a time in our lives where there isn't room for nurturing female friendships," says Faris, 49, alongside her costars. "If you have those high school friends or whatever, your friends that you can trust, that you depend on," the Scary Movie star jokingly adds, she finds herself telling them, "Can I hang out with you in a decade when the kid graduates?"

The Reality of Parenting and Career

Faris shares Jack, 13, with ex-husband Chris Pratt following the two stars' split in 2017. The actress got engaged to now-husband Michael Barrett in 2019 and announced in 2021 that they had eloped. Despite her successful career and new marriage, Faris's primary focus remains on her son and her work, leaving little room for the social connections she once enjoyed.

Her comments reflect a common experience among working parents, particularly mothers, who often find themselves stretched thin between professional obligations and family responsibilities. Faris's candidness about the challenges of maintaining friendships during this stage of life resonates with many who face similar struggles.

The Costars Weigh In

While Faris spoke about the challenges of finding time for friendships, her costar Isla Fisher offered a different perspective. "I mean, speak for yourself," quips Fisher, 50, referring to her split from ex-husband Sacha Baron Cohen. "I'm divorced, so all I do is see friends!"

The exchange highlights the different life stages and priorities that the actresses are navigating. Fisher's comment suggests that her divorce has opened up more time for social connections, while Faris's responsibilities as a parent limit her availability.

The Movie: Spa Weekend

Spa Weekend follows a quartet of high school friends escaping for a chaotic weekend at a fancy resort. The film, directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, explores the complexities of female friendships and the challenges of maintaining connections over the years.

Asked about starring in the film, Faris says she'll take "the value of these friendships" with her. "I'm glad that we were kind of at a certain age in life when we were able to really recognize and really appreciate how special it was to get to act together," she says of Fisher, Mann, 54, and Buteau, 49.

A Grateful Return

At a special August 7 Las Vegas screening of Spa Weekend hosted by Southwest Airlines, Faris told PEOPLE that she's "grateful" to be starring in "my second movie this summer." The House Bunny alum made a buzzy return with the Wayans brothers to the Scary Movie franchise with its sixth installment, released in June.

A "girls getaway weekend," she says, is "a fantasy" given her commitments as a mom: "The basketball game. The dentist. It's all right here." In Spa Weekend, Faris concludes with a laugh, "I love it that these women think they can pull it off. It doesn't go too smoothly for them!"

The Importance of Female Friendships

Faris's comments highlight the importance of female friendships, even when they are difficult to maintain. Her joking plea to friends, "Can I hang out with you in a decade when the kid graduates?" reflects the reality that friendships sometimes take a backseat during the busiest years of parenting and career-building.

However, the success of Spa Weekend suggests that these friendships are worth preserving. The film's exploration of the bonds between women resonates with audiences who appreciate the value of these connections.

As Faris continues to balance her career and parenting responsibilities, she remains committed to her work and her family. Her willingness to speak candidly about the challenges of maintaining friendships during this stage of life is a reminder that even Hollywood stars face the same struggles as everyone else.

For now, Faris is focused on her upcoming projects and her son, Jack. And while she may not have time for a girls' weekend getaway in real life, she'll always have Spa Weekend to remind her of the value of female friendship.
