Amy Schumer is getting divorced on the big screen.

Variety reported on Monday, August 17, that the actress-comedian will star in and produce a movie called Best Divorce Ever. In her real life, Schumer, 45, is going through a divorce herself; she split from husband Chris Fischer in December 2025, filing for divorce the following month after seven years of marriage.

The "smart, funny" Best Divorce Ever script from writer-director Sean Mullin "gives Amy a great playground to do what she does best," said Matthew Shreder, CEO of Concourse Media, in a statement to the outlet. The entertainment company will produce and finance the film alongside sister company Archetype Media Finance.

"Amy is one of the few people who can take something as painful as divorce and make it brutally honest and incredibly funny," said Shreder.

A Fresh Take on Divorce

Best Divorce Ever, according to Variety, follows Clarissa (Schumer) and Franklin, who after 20 years together decide they're done with marriage but not with each other.

"Determined to pull off the world's most amicable divorce, they throw an 'Untying the Knot' party and eagerly embrace their newly single lives," continues the description. "But when disastrous dates, suspicious children and spectacularly misguided attempts at 'conscious uncoupling' throw their perfect plan into chaos, Clarissa and Franklin discover that getting divorced is the easy part. Figuring out how to stay a happy family is where things get complicated."

The premise offers a fresh and comedic take on divorce, challenging the conventional narrative that divorce must be bitter, contentious, and final. Instead, the film explores the possibility of maintaining a positive relationship with an ex-spouse while navigating the complexities of single life and co-parenting.

Drawing from Real Life

The project arrives as Schumer navigates her own divorce from Fischer, a James Beard Award-winning chef. The couple married in 2018 and welcomed their son Gene, now 7, in May 2019. Schumer announced their split in a since-deleted Instagram post, describing it as an "amicable" decision made with "all love and respect."

"We would appreciate people respecting our privacy at this time. blah blah blah not because I dropped some lbs and thought I could bag a basketball player and not because he's a hot James Beard Award-winning chef who can still pull some hot tail," she wrote in the post. "Amicable and all love and respect! Family forever."

At the time, a source told PEOPLE that there was "nothing ugly" in the exes' separation. "It's a cohesive split. They've just been finalizing a few things."

The parallels between Schumer's real-life situation and the film's premise are striking. Like her character Clarissa, Schumer is navigating the end of a marriage while maintaining a commitment to family and co-parenting. Her willingness to draw on her personal experiences for the role suggests a comfort with vulnerability and a desire to challenge the stigma around divorce.

The Creative Team

The film's writer-director, Sean Mullin, drew inspiration from his own amicable divorce. "Divorce has a branding problem," Mullin told the outlet. "I think we need to change the narrative that the only successful way to end a marriage is for one person to die."

Mullin's perspective reflects a broader cultural shift in how divorce is perceived. While divorce was once viewed as a failure or a taboo, it is increasingly seen as a normal part of life that can be navigated with grace and dignity. By approaching the subject with humor and honesty, Mullin and Schumer aim to challenge stereotypes and offer a more nuanced portrayal of the divorce experience.

The film's producers, Concourse Media and Archetype Media Finance, are known for supporting smart, character-driven comedies. Matthew Shreder, CEO of Concourse Media, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that Schumer's comedic talents are perfectly suited to the material.

Schumer's Career and Personal Journey

Amy Schumer rose to fame with her sketch comedy series Inside Amy Schumer, which earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2015. She has since starred in films including Trainwreck, I Feel Pretty, and Kinda Pregnant (2025), which she co-wrote and starred in.

Schumer's comedy is known for its candid, often unflinching explorations of female experience, including relationships, body image, and sexuality. Her ability to find humor in life's most challenging moments has endeared her to audiences and critics alike.

Her personal life has also been a source of inspiration for her work. Her memoir, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, explored her childhood, her career, and her relationships with honesty and humor. The book was a bestseller and further established her as a voice of authenticity in comedy.

Schumer's split from Fischer has been a topic of public interest, and she has handled it with characteristic wit and grace. Her Instagram post announcing the split was a blend of humor and sincerity, reflecting her commitment to maintaining a positive relationship with her ex-husband.

Sharing the Variety article on her Instagram, Schumer thanked the outlet for "highlighting this exciting project," adding, "big year!" The post suggests that she is excited about the project and optimistic about the year ahead.

The Changing Landscape of Divorce Representation in Film

Best Divorce Ever is part of a broader trend in Hollywood toward more nuanced representations of divorce and family dynamics. Films and television shows have increasingly explored the complexities of modern relationships, including the challenges of co-parenting, blended families, and amicable separations.

By approaching divorce with humor and honesty, Best Divorce Ever seeks to challenge the stigma around the subject and offer a more positive portrayal of the process. The film's emphasis on maintaining a happy family after divorce reflects a growing recognition that relationships can evolve and transform rather than ending.

Mullin's comment that "divorce has a branding problem" captures the film's mission. By reframing divorce as an opportunity for growth and transformation, rather than a failure, the film aims to change the conversation around the subject.

What's Next for Amy Schumer?

Schumer continues to balance her career with her responsibilities as a mother. Her son, Gene, is now 7 years old, and she has spoken about the joys and challenges of parenting. In interviews, she has emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with Fischer for the sake of their son.

The release of Best Divorce Ever is expected to be a significant event in Schumer's career, offering her the opportunity to showcase her comedic talents in a role that is deeply personal. With a talented creative team and a timely premise, the film has the potential to resonate with audiences navigating similar experiences.

Amy Schumer's Best Divorce Ever is a bold, comedic exploration of divorce that draws on her own real-life experiences. The film's premise an amicable split that challenges the conventional narrative offers a fresh perspective on a subject often shrouded in stigma and pain.

With a script inspired by writer-director Sean Mullin's own divorce and a star whose personal journey mirrors the film's themes, Best Divorce Ever has the potential to be both hilarious and deeply moving. As Schumer continues to navigate her own divorce, her willingness to channel her experiences into her work demonstrates her commitment to honesty, vulnerability, and humor.
