Hailey Bieber's sister Alaia Baldwin Aronow is avoiding jail time for charges in connection with an altercation at a bar in 2024 where she threw a tampon at a bartender. Aronow, 33, has entered a pre-trial diversion program, according to court records reviewed by PEOPLE. She is next scheduled for an arraignment on August 25, and is required to attend classes and potentially pay fines in connection with her charges of simple assault, simple battery, battery, and criminal trespassing.

The Incident

Aronow was charged after being involved in a physical altercation at a bar called Club Elan in Savannah, Georgia, on February 24, 2024, PEOPLE previously reported, citing the Savannah Police Department. According to a police report previously obtained by PEOPLE, security footage allegedly showed Aronow forcing her way into an employee bathroom. Two bouncers and a bartender say they told Aronow she wasn't allowed in and needed to use the public restroom, when she allegedly became combative, the report claimed.

One bouncer told police Aronow yanked his hair. The other, who said he put the model in a bear hug, claimed Aronow kicked him in the genitals, the report said. A bartender at Club Elan interviewed by police claimed Aronow had told her she needed to use the bathroom to throw up and change her tampon, and was granted a few minutes, according to the report. When the bartender returned, Aronow allegedly threw a tampon at her, prompting her removal from the bar.

Aronow initially told police she had not thrown the tampon, but later admitted to it, and claimed she was acting in self-defense.

The Diversion Program

Georgia's pre-trial diversion program offers "an alternative to prosecuting offenders in the criminal justice system," according to law firm Lawson & Berry. "They hoped to help reform offenders and help them not make mistakes in the future instead of just sending them off to prison where they may not learn anything."

The program is designed to give first-time or low-level offenders a chance to avoid a criminal record by completing specific requirements, such as attending classes, paying fines, and staying out of legal trouble for a set period. The goal is rehabilitation rather than punishment, focusing on addressing the underlying issues that may have contributed to the offense.

Aronow's entry into the diversion program means that if she completes the requirements, the charges against her could be dismissed, allowing her to avoid a conviction and the long-term consequences that come with a criminal record.

The Consequences

While Aronow is avoiding jail time, the incident has had other consequences. The charges and the circumstances surrounding the altercation have been widely reported, drawing attention to the model and her family. The case has also raised questions about how the legal system handles incidents involving public figures and whether the diversion program is an appropriate response to the alleged behavior.

Aronow's attorneys have not commented on the case, and it is unclear what specific requirements she must meet as part of the diversion program. However, the program typically includes classes on anger management, substance abuse, or other relevant topics, as well as community service and fines.

The Baldwin Family Connection

Aronow is the sister of model Hailey Bieber, who is married to pop star Justin Bieber. The Baldwin family is well-known in the entertainment industry, with Alaia's father, Stephen Baldwin, and uncle, Alec Baldwin, both being prominent actors. The family's high profile has added to the public interest in the case.

Despite the attention, Aronow has largely stayed out of the spotlight, focusing on her family and her career as a model. The incident at Club Elan represents a rare public controversy for her, and the diversion program offers a path to putting the matter behind her.

Aronow's next court appearance is scheduled for August 25, when she will be arraigned. It is not clear whether she will need to appear in person or if her attorney will represent her. If she completes the diversion program, the charges against her will likely be dismissed, allowing her to move forward without a criminal record.

The case serves as a reminder of the legal system's ability to offer alternatives to traditional prosecution, particularly for those who are willing to take responsibility for their actions and work toward reform. For Aronow, the diversion program represents a second chance to put the incident behind her and continue her life without the burden of a criminal conviction.
