What are umbrella companies?

Contractors and freelancers who work under the IR35 regulations are directly employed by an umbrella corporation in the United Kingdom. The majority of an umbrella company's services are administrative and related to affordable accounting such as timesheet management, estimating PAYE tax and NI contributions, invoicing the client, receiving funds, and paying the contractor.

What is an umbrella company, and how do they function?

Umbrella companies have grown in popularity in the UK over the last decade, and they can provide a ‘hassle-free' business structure for many contractors. With hundreds of providers to choose from, we examine how a PAYE scheme works in operation, how to compare providers, and what questions to ask when deciding on a scheme.

What is the definition of an umbrella company?

A PAYE umbrella company is a typical UK limited company that is run by a third-party supplier who acts as a "employer" for its contractor employees. On behalf of the contractor who will be carrying out the task, a contract is signed between the umbrella firm and the recruitment agency.

The umbrella company offers its employees the salary service, processes all time sheets and invoices and after allowing deductions, pays its employees a wage.

However, what you can demand depends on whether or not your contract is considered to be a client's "supervision, management and control" (SDC). You can reimburse the cost of legitimate business expenses incurred from your contractor. You cannot recover the costs of travel and subsistence’s if your contract work is covered by the SDC rules.

What works in practice for an umbrella company?

This is your step in joining a UK PAYE umbrella Company:

1. The umbrella firm (as your 'employer') signs a contract with your recruiting agency once you have secured a contract role.

2. The contract of employment with the parachute will also be signed by you.

3. You complete a time sheet and pass it on to your Manager when you complete the pre-agreed time period on site.

4. Send your schedules, showing how many times you worked that week/month, to both your recruitment agency and the paraglider.

5. An organization that subsequently charges the end-client shall invoice the recruitment agency. 5.

6. The umbrella company will be able to prepare its payroll once payments are received from the agency.

7. After deducting job taxes, the agreed-upon umbrella fee/margin, personal taxes, and pension contributions, the umbrella will process your payroll and pay you a salary (if applicable). They'll also reimburse you for such permissible expenditures, such as mileage, that you've claimed.

8. You'll be sent a pay slip that shows all of these deductions as well as your net take-home pay.

9. You can deduct any outstanding expenses from your income tax bill at the end of each tax year.

How to find and compare reviews and schemes

If this is your first contract, it's likely that you found it through a recruitment firm. Many agencies have favored supplier partnerships with some of the most well-known umbrella systems, and they would allow you to join one of them. Before committing to a specific scheme, we suggest that you think about your choices and study the rest of the industry.

The most important source of contracting-related knowledge is undoubtedly the internet, but separating marketing speak from truly valuable material is a difficult task in and of itself.

For background information on the leading umbrella firms, you might try some of the contractor comparison pages, but we suggest that you take any league table rankings with a grain of salt because they are easily manipulated.

Over all, current clients are the best source of information about umbrella firms. If you're just starting out, this might be challenging, but if you have any contracting colleagues, ask for their input. You'll quickly learn which schemes are common among your peers and which should be avoided.
