When it was launched a few short years ago, Things was widely considered to be among the best to-do list apps out there on the App Store. It was hard to see how such a simple, streamlined, and efficient app could get any better… but those geniuses over at Things HQ were soon to show us how. The latest incarnation of Things now allows users to add more detail and notes to each of the items on their to-do lists, and they’ve also added the ability to create both long and short-term goals, too. The use of headings really helps to break down tasks into bite-sized pieces and allows you to organise your thoughts and plans as well as it allows you to organise your time. 2. Evernote

If you struggle with task management and time optimisation, the chances are you’re already a big fan of Evernote. This top app is a market leader for good reason: it’s incredibly versatile and allows you to save notes in both written and audio format (ideal for changing plans on the go!). Articles and web pages can be bookmarked for revisiting at a later time, and it syncs beautifully across a range of platforms.

3. IFTTT

Need to construct applets for productivity, but have little or no programming experience? If so, IFTTT (If This, Then That) is the app for you. It seamlessly allows you to link a wide range of services together, creating recipes and pathways which trigger all kinds of actions depending on the conditions set by yourself. The current form of IFTTT features more than 300 channels spread across an array of services and devices including all the major social networks with ample room for customisation. The best part? It’s completely free, and it’s set to grow much, much further.

4. Rescuetime

As previously discussed, one of the biggest threats to good time management is good ol’ procrastination. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram… such sites eat away at your time with a ravenous appetite, and cutting down your procrastination is key to getting more work done. However, in order to make positive new habits, we first need to get to grips with our old bad habits. Rescuetime runs in the background of your devices and monitors how much time is being spent (read: wasted) on your various apps. It will then deliver a report on your smartphone usage, and show you what you need to rein in to get more work done. You can even use Rescuetime to trigger alarms if you’ve been spending more time that you’d like on a particular site, and ensure that you knuckle down and get back to the task at hand.
