Ebooks had to happen” — Jeff Bezos

Due to an influx in the number of mobile devices amidst our societies, Everything has gone digital. Gone are the days when people used to walk around with briefcases full of papers, pens, and manuscripts. These days, we’ve seen the trend curve of ebooks going up. Ebooks aren’t made of hardcovers and pages hence this upvotes their mobility and portability which have greatly led to the rapid growth of their market and popularity. According to the Association of American Publishers (AAP), 21% of the total US book sales in 2021 were ebooks.

Reasons why ebook sales are on a rise

1. Ebooks do not take up any desk space: Ebooks aren’t tangible hence no need for the traditional bookshelves. People living in smaller apartments have no space for bookshelves hence they opt for ebooks.

2. Ebooks are highly mobile: With your phone, you carry your ebook everywhere you go. In the washroom, bus station, coffee shop, mention it.

3. Ebooks are cheaper: An ebook could be two times cheaper compared to its hardcover counterpart.

With all that said, there is not even a single reason why you shouldn’t write an ebook as an indie writer.

Reasons why you should write an ebook

Ebooks are cheaper to publish: You can publish an ebook without spending a single coin. When self-publishing an ebook, you do not need to first land a deal with any publishing house, nor with a printing press.

One copy for all:

With hardcover books, you have to print a copy for every sale. Even with ebooks, you offer a copy for each sale but not in a printed form. That means, you just keep reselling one thing that never gets used up. I mean, it’s like pouring water from a pot that never gets empty. Imagine reselling one thing a thousand times.

Write at your will:

When publishing a book with a publishing house, sometimes you are paid an advance based on the contract. That means, you have to comply with the contract at all costs and you ought to deliver in a period stated in the contract. But when self-publishing your electronic book, you write what you want, when you want. Additionally, you are free to put and remove your content to and from the market when you want. You do everything at your will.

Gaining expertise:

If you are not yet a prominent writer, it's very hard to land a deal with any publishing house. That means you won’t gain any exposure as a budding writer if you do not take the route of self-publishing.

Adding a brick to your career as a writer:

Establishing yourself as a writer isn’t something easy as said. So, what if you wrote an ebook about yourself? I know your life story might not make you a lot of sales but it can help you drag the spotlight onto your works. Advertise your blog in your ebook and ask the buyers to subscribe to your newsletter. That way, you will get your readers coming back to the blog again and again for more. The more eyeballs you get onto your work, the money you make.

Ebooks are gaining traction:

Just as I told you before, ebooks are gaining popularity. And yet we do not know what the future holds. Ebooks might gain more popularity in the coming years. Write your ebook now!! Remember, success comes to only those who prepare for it.

After writing your ebook, Do not forget to do the marketing. This is the most fundamental part of the process since its what puts money in your bank account. When publishing with a publishing house, you will have a full team doing the marketing. But if you are deciding on self publishing, you have to hustle your way out. Afterall its the real meaning of “indie publishing”.

Write your ebook now!!
