While the blow-up of the internet and social media has caused it's own share of problems, one thing that it has done is at least give people the platform now to clear up rumors and tell their own side of the story as soon as a rumor or scandal happens. This is not the way things always used to be. Some stars faced very harsh scrutiny and had their names tarnished when soft-sell magazines and even credible newspapers, which were the major source of information back in the day, published damaging claims about them. Once out, it's very hard to clear up a rumor even in today's world. Imagine how it was back then. Once the media painted a narrative about you, that was it and it was very hard to convince people otherwise about that image. That is what happened to actress Cossy Orjiakor and as she is saying now, she was NEVER able to recover from that damage.

Cossy Orjiakor is one name that in most people's minds is associated with "sex", "perversion", and "scandal". Because of her big breasts and the stories written about her, it's no wonder why, but how has that affected her life? During the worst of it in 2002, Cossy was accused of sleeping with a dog after a picture from a 2002 movie called Itohan came out. In the picture, a dog is seen behind Cossy. That picture basically tanked her career and the consequent stories about her being HIV positive and worse further threw her name into a deep grave.

Many years of dealing with this could not have been easy and so, when I saw the latest interview Cossy did with NaijaNews, I was immediately intrigued and wanted to hear her own side of things. She was very honest. Here are the highlights of her interview.

Speaking about seeking justice after 20 years of allegations that she slept with a dog, Cossy said:

The recent sex with animal videos and police involvement brought back the hidden pains I have endured for the past 20 years. I only reported to the police. I was too broke back then to involve a lawyer. I believed the Nigerian government will look into the case because it was so viral. Yet nothing was done. I lost my source of livelihood and friends deserted me thinking I was HIV positive as claimed by the newspapers. I feel so horrible. I feel invincible. I realize to them (the police) I am not worth their time and that’s so damaging.

Speaking about the damages the scandal caused, Cossy said:

I was banned from acting. The movies I acted in was seized. Movies like ‘Shattered Home’ by sunny Macdon was banned and he suffered great losses. Years back I produced my own movies and no body accepted them. Well I tried to build my own YouTube page and it was taken down, so I really don’t try anymore I just flow and chill then concentrate on ‘fansly’ where I entertain my few fans. Nollywood took a break from me. Also the only actress that said the truth back then was Shan George. Her movie career suffered back then. It was a heavy gang up against little me

Speaking about the sex-for-roles conversation and if any producer ever demand something in returning for giving her a role, Cossy said:

I had producers and directors that liked me but I used to make fun of it, never took it serious. Late Chico Ejiro wanted me but I never allowed him. But then his wife, Joy, thought that I was dating her husband. Maybe that’s why she slapped me on the set of ‘Itohan’, that dog movie. Well I know a lady who was dating her husband then. The lady was even her friend but me that didn’t accept got slapped

Speaking about plans for her future in acting, music, etc, Cossy said:

Am just catching cruise deary, I don’t have any carear in Nigeria. It’s all online . Am a creator in fansly/ifans. But then I lost my account with onlyfans. They don’t even allow Nigerians on the platform. My manager opened the account I was using it and when they found out I am Nigerian they took down my page. But fansly ain’t bad. At least I make enough to chill with. (About returning to acting), No dear. It’s just that when am called an actress some fans say they have never seen me in movies. So I just want them to know I was really a big star in Nollywood. But when you eat with the devil you eat with a long spoon

Cossy Orjiakor's story is to me a cautionary tale about the power of gossip and rumors. A nasty rumor can completely shatter somebody's life and career and so we should all be very careful I think about the things we believe, share, and say because the consequences for the person on the receiving end of the stick can be very horrible.

I hope Cossy continues to find healing, and I hope she finds some kind of justice after all that she went through. If you want to support her, you can find her on all social media platforms @cossybarbie.
