Why Obsession was an Instant Cult Classic

Obsession took the world by storm when it was first released to theaters. It was such a simple storyline, a horror concept that has finally been executed in the best way. This movie tackled the 'making a wish gone wrong concept,' and we horror fans finally got a fantastic horror story that we will never forget.

We follow the story of a young man named Bear, who is introduced as a bit of a shy 'nice guy.' He has a huge crush on Nikki, a childhood friend of his. He attempts to ask her out, but it does not go well. He decides to use an object called a One Wish Willow, that gives people the power to make a wish. He makes a wish for Nikki to fall in love with him and love him more than anyone in the world. He does this without thinking, not realizing that the wish was actually going to work.

Nikki instantly falls in love with him, and Bear is happy at first, until the wish starts to expose a dark side, leading to Nikki going off the deep end, becoming completely obsessed with him.

However, there is far more to this story than meets the eye.

Bear is not really a nice guy. He is a piece of crap that uses Nikki to his advantage, and he allows her to stay under the love spell, knowing that she is suffering and wanting to break free, but his obsession prevents her freedom.

It's a tragic story, and without all of these elements, I don't think this film would have been as popular:

• The two main leads that played Bear and Nikki were phenomenal.

• The editing to the film was so well done. I haven't seen editing to a horror film this great in a long time.

• The director was known for creating funny and horror skits on YouTube. His talent definitely shined through the film itself, and he was not afraid to take a huge, bold direction with the story and the characters.

• The mystery of what Nikki was experiencing under the spell of the wish was never explained. It left the audience with so many unanswered questions, leading to disturbing conclusions or ideas as to what Nikki was going through.

• Bear's backstory is never explained. We do get hints that his grandma has passed away and given him her home, and he was showing signs of depression since the beginning of the film. How he became this way was never revealed, but it makes the audience wonder how he became such a bad person, who was willing to let Nikki suffer throughout the film.

• The backstory to the friend group was sort of a mystery. The friend group consisted of Nikki, Bear, Ian, and Sarah. The friend group came off very secretive, and they didn't exactly share everything with each other. The audience never really knew if the rumors of Nikki having a thing for Bear was actually true, but the actress does such a great job conveying a possible theory that she liked Bear as more than a friend. This really does make the theory so messed up, because Bear ruined the life of Nikki over his stupidity and selfishness.

• The One Wish Willow was never explained. This was such an intriguing mystery in the film, and I loved how the director purposely chose to keep the product's power a secret. It made the audience question the modern universe in the film, leaving people with questions as to how this powerful object came about for sale in stores.

• And lastly, the marketing to the film was amazing. The director used social media to his advantage, and the fans instantly flocked to the movie, and the film's popularity continued to grow online.

Obsession is one of the best horror films of 2026, and it's so awesome how a low-budget horror film was able to stay in theaters for a long time, making $460 million in the box office.

Horror fans truly won this year.
