As soon as she unlocked the door, a musty, rotten smell hit Sudipa's nose. On a rainy day, such a smell rising from this old house was nothing unusual. Sudipa was used to it by now. Yet somehow, today it made her stomach churn. Forcing her rain-soaked body forward, she made her way to the bathroom. Turning on the shower, she stood beneath it, shivering uncontrollably. Water streamed endlessly down her face. This was a mountainous region where water had to be used sparingly, but Sudipa didn't care about that today. Would the police really look for Dipta? The moment they heard what had happened, they simply concluded that he must have slipped and fallen into the ravine. Should she tell everyone at home right now? Or wait until morning? There was no electricity. Still drenched, she began searching for candles in the darkness. As she fumbled around, she suddenly noticed that the front door was standing wide open. She froze. Had she forgotten to close it after coming inside? No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't remember. Slowly, she walked toward the door. Then she stumbled. Someone was sitting in the room. Even in the darkness, the figure was clearly visible. In a terrified voice, Sudipa shouted, "Who... who's there? Kaushik?" "Were you expecting Kaushik, perhaps?" "W-Who?" "You recognized me well enough, Su. It's me... your Dipta." "D-Dipta?" The familiar voice terrified Sudipa far more than the presence of an unknown intruder ever could. "Why did you leave me there, Su? You know how much I'm afraid of the rain." Sudipa knew exactly how much Dipta feared rain. Seven years ago, during a terrible storm, a falling tree branch had left him permanently paralyzed. Dipta slowly rolled his wheelchair toward her. Sudipa felt her throat go dry. When he reached her, he wrapped both arms around her. His cold, wet body made her shudder. "H-How did you come back, Dipta?" "They brought me back..." His voice sounded strangely raspy. "Who did?" "Can't you see them around us?" "No... Who are you talking about?" "The ones who dwell in the darkness. The same darkness where you left me tonight." "Dipta!" Sudipa screamed. "I can't live a single moment without you, Su. Did you really think you could leave me behind and escape?" "No... No!" Sudipa struggled to break free from his embrace, but she couldn't move even an inch. She could clearly feel two hands rising from beneath the ground and wrapping themselves around her legs. Shadowy figures drifted throughout the room. Their presence surrounded her. All over her body, she could feel invisible beings moving and crawling. They were playing a sinister game. And Dipta had joined them. "Nooooo!" Sudipa let out a desperate scream. But the roar of the pouring rain swallowed her cry. There was no escape anymore. The End.
