What Happened During Andy's Phone Call In 'Chucky' Series Premiere?

Should This Be Addressed?

In the series premiere of Chucky, series protagonist Jake Wheeler gets a call from someone inquiring about the Chucky doll that he has acquired. Longtime fans of the franchise guessed it to be original Child's Play protagonist Andy Barclay (portrayed once again by Alex Vincent), and this became evident very quickly. However, as the season has gone on, Andy's phone call feels a bit odd.

Jake, trying to sell the Chucky doll online, gets contacted by Andy via cell phone. Andy then asks whether anything strange has happened regarding the doll and whether Jake has checked for batteries within it. The conversation halts when Andy says, "Wait. Hold on a second." Then there is a pause. Andy continues with, "Hello? Is somebody there?" The phone call then ends. So what exactly happens that causes Andy to hang up the phone?

One possibility that came to mind is that either Tiffany or Chucky broke into his home, whether it be in possessed human form or doll form. For a little while, I entertained the notion that perhaps one or the other may have possessed him the way that Nica Pierce has been possessed. From a certain point of view, that could be supported by the events of the most recent episode, "Twice the Grieving, Double the Loss," in which Andy drives off to Hackensack, leaving Kyle behind. On the other hand, I read that scene as Andy knowing the danger he would be up against, and not wanting Kyle to be in the deadly situation ahead of him. Plus, the Chucky-hunting beforehand (both in Cult of Chucky and in the TV series) make it even less likely that he is possessed. Even though a Chucky doll remaining at Harrogate could have theoretically possessed him during an attempted escape, his actions afterward do not support this, as he could have just killed Kyle if he truly were possessed.

So again, what happens during the phone call that cuts it short?

It is worth taking into account when the phone call takes place in the timeline. The chronology of the show has been wonky. (See this article for the 2017 vs 2021 dilemma.) But if we go simply by the month and day on the gravestone of Jake Wheeler's father, we see that Lucas Wheeler dies October 19. In the fifth episode of the season, we learn that it is November 8, and the events of the film Cult of Chucky concluded two weeks prior. This is supported in the sixth episode, when Devon says he read an article about the events at Harrogate Psychiatric Hospital from two weeks prior. If we go along with this established timeframe, then the events of Cult take place somewhere around October 25, if we take the "two weeks" remarks literally. No matter the year, October 19 is more like three weeks prior.

This would mean that Andy calls Jake on the phone about a week before he ends up at Harrogate toward the end of the aforementioned film. It seems odd that Andy would wonder whether somebody is in his own home, hang up, and then not follow up with Jake. In Cult, we do not see any signs that anyone has broken into his cabin or anything of that sort. Things seem pretty normal(ish) for Andy until he reads an article about the murders going on at Harrogate and departs immediately.

So what happened that ended Andy's original call to Jake? That is still a mystery, and it is unknown whether or not that will be addressed in the season finale. It seemed so ominous when I watched the first episode. But as time has gone on, I feel as though the call was ended abruptly mainly for story reasons, so that Jake is not given all the Chucky information that he needs. Maybe there is no real in-universe reason that Andy hung up the phone. Maybe he heard a sound, felt paranoid, and investigated, and found nothing (as has happened with some who live alone, or even with only a pet—or a supernatural doll head, in Andy's case—for company). And for whatever reason, Andy does not check up with Jake again and gets occupied with the events in Cult a week later and the aftermath. It all sees odd, and whether or not this all gets cleared up is yet to be seen. The series finale of Chucky airs Tuesday, November 30, 2021 on Syfy and USA Network.
