Top 10 Real-life Accounts Of Haunted Dolls

By nikhil sablaniaPublished 2 years ago 8 min read

Before the famous Chucky and the Annabelle doll began scaring audiences, people all over the world were haunted by creepy dolls.

Real-life accounts of spooky dolls have been haunting people for centuries. Although dolls can be considered a staple in most households, they also tend to be one of the most terrifying objects during childhood.

With their large eyes and fixed smiles, dolls often look like they are watching you even when you can't see them.

A lot of these stories come from children who claim that their dolls move around by themselves or talk to them in their sleep.

Others come from adults who have the unfortunate luck of crossing paths with haunted dolls. Adults are not alone in believing that these toys are possessed, haunted, or just plain evil.

Some psychics also believe that certain dolls are capable of feeding off negative energy and have the ability to move on their own accord.

Wait until you hear about these bad boys and girls if you thought your mother's doll collection was weird.

Welcome to a new world of mystery, where today we're counting down our top ten real-life haunting dolls.

In this list, we will take a look at 10 of the most haunted dolls that are known to exist today.

They have been reported by many to be extremely creepy and in some cases even evil. For those who are easily frightened, you might want to proceed with caution when reading about these haunted toys.

Petra the Stressed Doll

Petra the Stressed Doll is a small doll manufactured by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild. The doll was advertised as a “stress relief toy”, with material that would make it soft if you squeezed it and hard if you froze it.

According to the doll’s description, it was created from a mixture of corn starch and water, which makes it moldable and squeezable when warm and hard when cold.

The doll has been discontinued for unknown reasons (possibly because of the creepy stories surrounding it) but remains in stock at some online stores.

According to owners, Petra was more than just a stress relief toy – she had some mysterious qualities about her as well.

Let’s say you left your house for a few hours – when you came back home, Petra would be in a different position than when you left her.

And not only would she be in a different position, but she would be facing in your direction!

But what’s even creepier is that if you got up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water or go to the bathroom, Petra would always be watching you. She wouldn’t be facing any other direction – just straight ahead

Lilly

"Lilly" was created in Germany during the 1800s and features actual human hair, according to Zak Bagans of Ghost Adventures' Haunted Museum.

She was discovered by an art dealer, who took her home, but she began having recurring nightmares about "a small child who had a horrible accident," according to the museum's Facebook post.

It was then listed for sale at an art shop. A customer's little girl once spoke to the doll for 3 hours, connecting with her as if she were a real child.

"' Lilly' was a little girl who had been subjected to "severe violence," she said the proprietor. When Bagans first saw the doll, he felt an "immense energy" flowing from it.

Pupa

Pupa might well be sweet, but don't be fooled by her innocent appearance: she has a nasty side.

Pupa was built in the 1920s to look like her 5-year-old owner and was adored and cared for until the landlord's death in 2005 when the family decided to put her in a glass cabinet.

The pupa has been seen tapping on the glass, being found in various places, and leaving notes inside the darkened case countless times since then.

A family member is said to have seen her wiggling on camera, but the footage was mysteriously covered in "white film" with the words "Pupa no!" when it was uploaded.

Pupa's owner had reportedly always said that she had "a mind of her own.".

The Crying Boy Painting

In the 1950s, artist Giovanni Bragolin created a series of paintings depicting crying boys, which became popular during the 1960s and 1970s (creepy, right?).

Many of these paintings caught on fire and could not be destroyed. Some people blamed this on the paintings being cursed - others believed they were made of asbestos.

Whatever the reason, the painting has become infamous as a "cursed" item and is said to bring bad luck to its owners.

Although not a traditional doll, "The Crying Boy" painting has long been rumored to be cursed.

There is no evidence that either story is true, but the paintings have been burned in hundreds of house fires over the years.

The Amityville Clown Doll

In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr brutally murdered his entire family in the house of 112 Ocean Avenue in Long Island, New York, which became known as the Amityville Horror House.

A year later, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the house with their three children. They stayed for 28 days before fleeing after experiencing paranormal phenomena such as cold spots, disembodied voices, green slime oozing from walls, and doors slamming shut on their own.

A clown doll was also found in one of the kids’ bedrooms. It had human hair and teeth and its mouth would open on its own.

This was a prop used in the 1979 film based on The Amityville Horror book. The whereabouts of the doll are unknown today but it has become popular enough to spawn countless replicas which you can probably find online today.

Piggy

Piggy is a creepy doll who lives in a museum in Kentucky. He was originally owned by a family whose daughter became possessed after playing with him.

The father attempted to throw Piggy away, but he kept turning up on the family's porch.

When he finally took Piggy to the police station, Piggy vanished from his trunk and magically reappeared at his home once again.

Piggy finally found a permanent home at the museum where he currently resides.

He has been known to move around his display case, change his position, and sometimes vanish completely only to reappear later in another position.

Piggy is the first of three haunted dolls on this list that belongs to a paranormal investigation group.

This doll has been known to move on its own, as well as make sounds that are only picked up by audio recorders.

It’s also known for causing physical pain to those who come near it. This doll is so dangerous that it was transported in a sealed box to avoid hurting anyone else.

The Doll at the Long Island Odditorium

The Long Island Odditorium is a vintage-style museum that has a collection of strange and spooky items from throughout history, from Marilyn Manson's old coffin to a suit allegedly made from human skin. But one of their more frightening attractions is the haunted doll, who makes an appearance in their "haunted room."

Before the museum found the doll, it was owned by a young girl named Lilly.

Lilly was very attached to her doll and took her everywhere she went, but eventually, Lilly became so sick that she passed away.

Her mother put the doll away in storage in an attempt to forget about it. But when they explored their storage room years later, they found out that they weren't the only ones still playing with the doll.

They could hear footsteps and laughter coming from the room where the doll was kept, so they decided to investigate.

Once inside, they heard whispering and then saw the doll moving around on its own -- it began walking across the floor on its own volition before hiding behind boxes and then running up a wall.

They were so scared, they quickly left and put up a sign asking people not to enter without supervision.

Robert the Doll

Robert is one of the most famous haunted dolls in America, which has been investigated by many paranormal groups.

The story of this creepy doll goes back to 1906 when Robert was given as a birthday gift to a young boy named Robert Eugene Otto.

Not long after that, people in their house began reporting strange occurrences like hearing footsteps and seeing the doll moving around on his own.

Otto often talked to the doll, and according to his parents, the doll responded.

Nowadays, Robert resides at the Martello Gallery-Key West Art and Historical Museum, where he continues to garner attention.

Each year, the doll receives hundreds of letters of apology from ex-skeptics who photograph him “without permission,” only to leave, experience various accidents, and come to associate them with Robert’s cursed influence.

The Annabelle Doll

Thanks to “The Conjuring” film series, Annabelle’s story has a prominent place in pop culture.

The true story starts with a woman, who bought the doll from an antique store in 1970 and gave it to her daughter as a gift. The creepy things began to happen almost immediately, as the doll would move about by itself and leave messages for the family.

And then the doll started to write messages on paper that read "help us" or "Help Lou".

Soon after, family members began experiencing physical attacks from an unknown source. This is when they called an expert of paranormal activity, Ed Warren, and his wife Lorraine.

Mandy the Haunted Raggedy Ann Doll

Mandy the Haunted Raggedy Ann Doll is perhaps one of the most famous haunted dolls in the world.

Mandy is a vintage Raggedy Ann doll that has been seen moving, talking, and even throwing things.

A psychic medium who visited the home where this creepy doll life has claimed that Mandy was once a young girl who was killed by her father's abuse.

The girl's spirit became stuck in the doll after she died.

Mandy was originally purchased by her current owner, Laura Hundgen, at an antique shop in South Carolina.

Shortly after taking her home, strange things began happening in Hundgen's house.

Objects would fly off shelves and smash onto the ground. The family cat had scratches all over its body when they found it one day, but there were no signs of an intruder in the house.

They later witnessed objects flying off the shelves with their own eyes.

Hudgens contacted paranormal researchers to come and investigate her home.

Many believed that Mandy was the center of all evil inside her house. Some say that this doll was cursed from its conception because it was made with human hair and teeth!

Conclusion

As you can see, dolls can be pretty spooky. But if you own one, there are ways to protect yourself from a haunted doll that may be around you.

The first thing you should do is learn the history of the doll and its previous owners.

If the doll was purchased from an antique store or flea market, chances are it had been around for a while and has already been inhabited by a spirit.
