'The Woman No One Could Find'

"Because the ones who searched for her… never came back."

By Kamran khanPublished 5 months ago • 5 min read

The last message Mara Quinn ever sent wasn’t a goodbye.

It was a location.

No words. No explanation. Just a blinking red pin dropped somewhere deep in a stretch of forest that didn’t officially exist on any map.

Her sister, Lila, received it at exactly 3:17 a.m.

By 3:18, the message was gone.

Everyone told Lila the same thing: Don’t go looking for her.

The police filed a report. Volunteers organized a search. Drones scanned the surrounding areas. Nothing. No signal. No footprints. No trace of Mara—like she had slipped out of reality itself.

But Lila knew her sister.

Mara didn’t just disappear.

She left clues.

And that location… that wasn’t random.

Three days later, Lila found it again.

Not on her phone—but scratched into the inside of her bedroom wall.

The numbers were jagged, uneven, like they’d been carved in the dark. Beneath them, a second line had appeared overnight:

“It sees when you stop moving.”

Lila didn’t remember writing it.

The forest began where the road ended.

No signs. No paths. Just a wall of trees so dense it looked like the earth had tried to hide something inside it.

The air changed the moment she stepped in.

It wasn’t just quiet—it was wrong. No insects. No birds. No wind. Even her footsteps sounded distant, like they didn’t belong to her.

Her phone lost signal instantly.

But the location… it was still there.

Blinking.

Guiding her deeper.

After an hour, Lila noticed the first sign she wasn’t alone.

Footprints.

Not fresh—but not old either.

They circled the same patch of ground over and over, as if someone had been walking in loops, afraid to stop.

In the center of the circle was a backpack.

Mara’s.

Lila rushed forward, dropping to her knees.

“Mara?” she called out.

Her voice didn’t echo.

It just… vanished.

Inside the bag, everything was untouched—water, flashlight, even Mara’s phone.

The screen was cracked.

Still on.

A video was playing.

Lila hesitated, then pressed play.

The footage was shaky, filmed from Mara’s perspective. Trees blurred past as she walked quickly, breathing hard.

“I think it followed me from the house,” Mara whispered.

The camera jerked toward the darkness between the trees.

“There’s nothing here… but I can hear it when I stop.”

The video cut.

Then restarted.

Same forest. Same panic. But something had changed.

The shadows behind Mara looked… thicker.

Closer.

“I tried to run,” she said. “But it doesn’t chase you. It waits.”

A long pause.

“If you keep moving, it can’t reach you.”

The camera lowered slightly, and for a split second—

Something stood behind her.

Tall.

Wrong.

Its shape flickered, like it couldn’t decide what it was.

The video ended.

Lila’s hands shook as she dropped the phone.

A cold realization settled over her.

The footprints.

The circles.

Mara hadn’t been lost.

She had been stalling.

Keeping herself alive.

Lila stood slowly.

And that’s when she felt it.

A presence.

Not a sound. Not a movement.

Just the certainty that something had noticed her.

She turned.

Nothing.

But the forest felt tighter now. Closer.

Like it was watching.

Lila started walking.

Fast.

Then faster.

Her breath came in short bursts as she pushed through branches and uneven ground. She didn’t know where she was going anymore—the blinking location on her phone had disappeared.

All she knew was one thing:

Don’t stop.

Minutes passed.

Or hours.

Time didn’t feel real anymore.

Her legs burned, her lungs screamed—but she didn’t dare slow down.

Because every time she almost stopped…

She heard it.

A shift in the air behind her.

A step that wasn’t hers.

Eventually, her body betrayed her.

She stumbled, collapsing to the ground.

Just for a second.

Just to breathe.

And in that second—

Everything changed.

The forest went silent.

Completely.

Lila froze.

Slowly… carefully… she looked up.

The trees around her seemed taller now. Thinner. Twisting upward like they were reaching for something.

And between them—

It stood.

Closer than it should have been.

Too close.

Its form was wrong, like it had been stretched from a human shape but never finished. Its limbs were too long, its head tilted at an angle that made her stomach turn.

But its face—

Its face was hers.

Smiling.

Lila scrambled to her feet and ran.

Faster than before. Desperate. Blind.

Branches tore at her skin, roots tried to trip her—but she didn’t stop.

She couldn’t.

Behind her, she heard it.

Not running.

Not chasing.

Just… appearing.

Closer each time she slowed.

Then, suddenly—

She broke through the trees.

And there it was.

A house.

Old. Rotting. Hidden in the heart of the forest.

The door was open.

Inside, it was dark.

But she could see something on the wall.

A mirror.

Lila hesitated.

Every instinct told her not to go inside.

But her body was failing.

Her legs trembled.

Her vision blurred.

She stepped through the door.

The air inside was freezing.

The moment she crossed the threshold, the noise outside vanished.

No footsteps.

No presence.

Nothing.

For the first time since entering the forest—

She was alone.

Lila collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath.

“I made it…” she whispered.

A soft sound answered her.

A voice.

From the mirror.

“You stopped.”

Lila’s blood turned to ice.

She looked up slowly.

Her reflection stood in the mirror.

But it wasn’t copying her.

It was standing still.

Smiling.

Behind it—

Mara.

Her eyes wide, her face pale, pounding silently against the inside of the glass.

“Don’t—” Mara mouthed.

The reflection tilted its head.

“You found her,” it said softly.

The surface of the mirror rippled.

Lila tried to move.

She couldn’t.

Her body felt heavy. Frozen.

The reflection stepped closer to the glass from the inside.

“And now,” it whispered, “you can take her place.”

The room stretched.

The walls bent inward.

The mirror grew larger, swallowing the space.

Lila felt herself being pulled forward, inch by inch, toward her own reflection.

Mara screamed silently behind it.

And then—

Everything went black.

Weeks later, a search team finally reached the forest.

They found the house.

The door was open.

Inside, the air was cold.

Still.

And on the far wall—

A mirror.

Two women stood inside it.

One pounding. Screaming. Desperate to get out.

The other standing perfectly still.

Smiling.

Watching.

Waiting.

And when the first rescuer stepped closer… the smiling one slowly raised her hand—

Because if no one could find the woman…

then why were there more of them every time someone tried?
