The Whispering Shadows
It was a cold October night when Daniel decided to take a shortcut through Blackwood Forest. The villagers had warned him about the eerie whispers and the disappearances that plagued the area. But Daniel, ever the skeptic, brushed off the stories as mere folklore.
As he stepped onto the narrow path, the trees loomed over him like silent sentinels. The deeper he went, the more the air thickened with an unshakable sense of dread. Then, he heard it—a soft whisper, just behind his ear.
Turn back…
Daniel spun around, heart pounding. No one was there. The wind howled through the trees, but the whisper had been distinct, almost... human. Swallowing his fear, he pressed on, but with every step, the whispering grew louder.
Leave… before it’s too late…
The path suddenly forked. One side led towards a clearing where the moonlight barely touched the ground; the other descended into darkness. A shadow moved at the edge of his vision. His breath hitched.
"Hello?" he called out, his voice trembling.
No response. Only the rustling of leaves.
Then, a scream echoed through the forest. A shrill, blood-curdling cry that made Daniel’s blood run cold. He turned and bolted, his feet pounding against the earth. But the faster he ran, the heavier the air became—as if unseen hands were gripping his lungs.
He tripped.
Falling face-first into the dirt, he scrambled to get up, but something held him down. The whispers now surrounded him, no longer pleading, but laughing—mocking him.
A decayed hand emerged from the ground, gripping his wrist with bone-chilling force.
Daniel screamed.
The last thing he saw was a pair of glowing red eyes staring at him from the shadows before darkness swallowed him whole.
The Vanishing
The next morning, the villagers found his footprints leading into the forest.
But they never found Daniel.
Weeks passed, and whispers of his fate spread through the village like wildfire. Some believed he had fallen victim to an ancient curse, while others insisted that the forest had claimed yet another soul. The elders warned children not to stray too close, lest they, too, be swallowed by the darkness.
One night, an old man named Elias, the village historian, decided to uncover the truth. Armed with a lantern and an old map, he ventured into Blackwood Forest, following Daniel’s last known path.
The forest was eerily silent, save for the occasional hoot of an owl. Elias pressed on, his lantern casting long shadows that danced with every step. Then, the whispering began.
He’s here… watching…
Elias stopped in his tracks, his pulse racing. "Who’s there?" he demanded.
Silence.
Then, just ahead, he saw it—a faint glow through the trees. Approaching cautiously, he found an old, abandoned cabin, its walls covered in strange symbols. The door creaked as he pushed it open. Inside, dust and cobwebs covered every surface, but something caught his eye.
A journal.
Blowing off the dust, Elias flipped through its pages. The handwriting was messy, frantic.
The whispers won’t stop. They know I’m here. The shadows… they have eyes.
The final entry sent chills down his spine:
I see them. Glowing red eyes. They are coming for me. If anyone finds this—RUN!
A gust of wind slammed the door shut. The whispering intensified, turning into a deafening chorus. Elias turned to flee, but a shadow detached itself from the corner of the room. The last thing he saw was the glint of glowing eyes before darkness consumed him.
The Legend Lives On
The villagers never saw Elias again. His lantern was found near the forest’s edge, its flame extinguished. The journal lay beside it, open to the final page.
From that night onward, the whispers in Blackwood Forest grew louder, calling out to anyone who dared enter.
And Daniel’s name was among them.
