The Whispering Dog
Lucy had always been fond of the old house at the end of the lane. It was abandoned, with its broken windows and overgrown garden, but it still held a strange, quiet charm for her. One evening, as the sun began to dip behind the trees, Lucy ventured out for a walk and decided to explore the house again.
As she approached, she heard it. A soft, low growl.
Lucy stopped in her tracks. At first, she thought it was just the wind or maybe her imagination, but the growl grew louder. She turned, her heart skipping a beat, to find a large, shaggy dog standing just behind her. Its eyes glowed faintly, and its fur was matted, dirty, as though it had been wandering the streets for days. But there was something... wrong about it.
"Hey, boy," Lucy whispered, trying to coax it closer. It didn’t move. Instead, it stared at her, unblinking. Its growl turned into something more like a low, guttural whisper.
Lucy’s curiosity tugged at her, but a growing sense of unease gripped her chest. The dog stepped closer, its paws silent on the grass, but still, it did not bark, only stared.
"Who... who are you?" Lucy asked, though she knew she was being foolish.
The dog’s lips curled into a grin—too wide, too unnatural.
“Lucy
She froze. The voice wasn’t the dog’s. It was a deep, gravelly whisper, coming from somewhere behind the dog.
“Lucy,” it repeated, as the dog’s head tilted slowly to one side, as if waiting for her reaction.
Lucy’s heart pounded in her chest. She took a cautious step backward, but the dog followed, its eyes never leaving hers. The whispering voice continued.
“Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.”
Lucy’s blood ran cold. That voice—it sounded so familiar. It was her mother’s voice.
But her mother had passed away two years ago.
The dog’s grin widened, its breath coming in quick, sharp gasps. It circled Lucy, but its body seemed to flicker, as though it was shifting between the dog and something else—something far darker. The whisper grew louder, more insistent.
“Come inside, Lucy. Come home…”
The dog lunged suddenly, its mouth opening wider than any dog’s should, revealing rows of jagged teeth that seemed to go on forever.
Lucy screamed and stumbled backward, her legs trembling. She turned and ran, hearing the creature’s footsteps echoing behind her. But no matter how fast she ran, she could feel the dog’s presence growing closer, its eerie whisper in her ear.
“You can’t escape me, Lucy.”
