The Whispering Ceiling

Ethan Had never Believed in Ghosts

By John SmithPublished 5 months ago 3 min read

To him, every strange sound had a logical explanation—old pipes, creaking wood, the wind sneaking through cracks. That’s why, when he found a cheap apartment on the top floor of a worn-out building, he didn’t hesitate.

“It’s a bit old,” the landlord admitted, avoiding eye contact. “But it’s quiet. Very quiet.”

That should have been a warning.

---

The first night was peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Ethan lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The paint above him was cracked, forming strange patterns like twisted faces frozen in silent screams. He chuckled at his own imagination and turned off the light.

At exactly 2:13 AM—

*Tap… tap… tap…*

His eyes opened instantly.

The sound was faint, but clear. It was coming from above him.

Ethan frowned. “Probably rats,” he muttered.

*Tap… tap… tap…*

It sounded… deliberate.

Not random.

Not like an animal.

He sat up and stared at the ceiling.

“Hello?” he called out jokingly. “Keep it down up there.”

The tapping stopped.

Silence filled the room again.

Ethan smirked and lay back down.

“See? Nothing.”

---

The second night, it returned.

But this time, it wasn’t just tapping.

*Scratch… scratch… tap…*

Ethan turned on the light immediately. His heart beat faster than he expected.

“Okay… that’s new.”

He grabbed a chair and stood on it, pressing his ear against the ceiling.

For a moment, nothing.

Then—

*Tap.*

Right above his head.

He nearly fell off the chair.

“Alright, that’s it,” he whispered. “Someone’s messing with me.”

The next morning, Ethan marched to the landlord.

“There’s someone in the apartment above mine,” he said.

The landlord went pale.

“There… is no apartment above yours.”

Ethan laughed. “That’s not funny.”

“I’m serious,” the landlord said quietly. “You’re on the top floor.”

---

That night, Ethan didn’t sleep.

He sat on his bed, staring at the ceiling, waiting.

2:13 AM.

Right on time.

*Tap… tap… tap…*

“Who’s there?” Ethan shouted.

The tapping stopped.

Then—

A voice.

Soft. Faint.

Whispering.

“…help me…”

Ethan froze.

His throat went dry.

“Who said that?” he whispered.

“…please…”

The voice came from above.

From the ceiling.

His fear turned into curiosity.

Against his better judgment, Ethan grabbed a knife from the kitchen and climbed onto the chair again.

His hands trembled as he pressed against one of the cracked sections.

“…help me…”

“I’m trying,” Ethan said, his voice shaking.

He pushed harder.

The plaster cracked.

Dust fell into his eyes.

Then—

A small hole opened.

Cold air rushed down from above.

Ethan leaned closer and looked inside.

Darkness.

Complete darkness.

“…I can’t see you,” he whispered.

There was silence.

Then—

Two eyes opened in the dark.

Right above his face.

Ethan screamed and fell backward, crashing onto the floor.

The eyes didn’t blink.

They just stared.

Watching.

Waiting.

---

Ethan packed his bags immediately.

He didn’t care about the rent. He didn’t care about anything except getting out.

As he rushed toward the door, the whisper came again.

“…don’t leave me…”

Ethan stopped.

His hand hovered over the doorknob.

“No,” he said firmly. “You’re not real.”

“…you opened it…”

The voice changed.

It was no longer weak.

It was deeper.

Hungry.

“…now I can come down…”

The ceiling above him began to crack.

Loudly.

Violently.

Chunks of plaster fell to the ground.

Ethan backed away slowly, horror filling his chest.

“No… no, no…”

A hand pushed through the ceiling.

Pale. Thin. Twisted.

Then another.

And another.

They clawed their way out, tearing the ceiling apart like paper.

Ethan ran for the door.

But it wouldn’t open.

The handle wouldn’t move.

Behind him—

Something dropped to the floor.

A wet, heavy sound.

Ethan turned slowly.

It stood there.

Tall.

Too tall.

Its head bent unnaturally to fit inside the room. Its limbs were long and broken-looking, as if they had been twisted too many times. Its skin was stretched tight over its bones, and its eyes—

Those same eyes.

From the ceiling.

“…you heard me…” it whispered.

Ethan shook his head, tears streaming down his face.

“I tried to help…”

The creature smiled.

Its mouth split wider than humanly possible.

“…you did…”

It took a step closer.

“…you let me out…”

---

The next morning, the landlord unlocked the apartment door.

The room was empty.

No furniture.

No belongings.

No Ethan.

Only the ceiling—

Perfectly intact.

As if nothing had ever broken through it.

The landlord sighed and locked the door again.

Under his breath, he whispered,

“Room’s available again.”

---

That night, a new tenant moved in.

Everything was quiet.

Until—

2:13 AM.

*Tap… tap… tap…*

From the ceiling.

Waiting.
