The Whisper Beneath the Floorboards

The old house on Willow Creek Road had been empty for nearly twenty years.

Everyone in the nearby town knew its story. Strange noises. Lights appearing in windows long after the electricity had been cut. Shadows moving behind curtains that no longer existed.

Most people avoided it.

But Ethan Parker wasn't most people.

As a freelance writer obsessed with ghost stories, he saw the abandoned house as an opportunity. If he could spend a few nights there and document his experience, he might finally create the story that would make his career.

On a cold October afternoon, Ethan arrived carrying a backpack, a flashlight, a camera, and enough supplies for three days.

The house stood alone at the edge of the woods, surrounded by dead grass and twisted trees.

Its paint had long since peeled away, exposing gray wood that looked almost skeletal.

The front door opened with a long groan.

Inside, dust covered everything.

The air smelled of mold and age.

Perfect, Ethan thought.

That first evening passed quietly.

He explored every room, recording videos and taking photographs.

The house had three bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, and a large living room with a fireplace.

Nothing unusual happened.

By midnight, Ethan was slightly disappointed.

The legends seemed exaggerated.

He settled into a sleeping bag in the living room and quickly fell asleep.

Then came the whisper.

He woke suddenly.

At first he thought he was dreaming.

A faint voice floated through the darkness.

"Ethan..."

His eyes snapped open.

The room was silent.

He sat up.

"Hello?"

No answer.

Only the sound of wind scratching branches against the walls.

After several minutes, he convinced himself he had imagined it.

Eventually, he returned to sleep.

The next morning, Ethan reviewed the audio from his camera.

His stomach tightened.

At 2:13 a.m., while he had been sleeping, a voice had clearly spoken his name.

"Ethan..."

The recording captured it perfectly.

His excitement returned.

Maybe the stories were true after all.

That evening, he decided to investigate further.

As darkness settled outside, he walked through the house with his flashlight.

Everything seemed normal until he entered the dining room.

There, he heard it again.

A whisper.

Soft.

Barely audible.

Coming from below.

He froze.

The sound seemed to emerge from beneath the wooden floor.

He knelt and pressed his ear against the boards.

The whisper continued.

Not one voice.

Many voices.

Dozens of them.

Speaking too quietly to understand.

A chill raced down his spine.

The floorboards vibrated ever so slightly.

As if something beneath them was moving.

Ethan backed away.

For the first time, he felt genuinely afraid.

Still, curiosity won.

He fetched a crowbar from his car.

Returning to the dining room, he pried up one of the loose boards.

Dust exploded into the air.

Beneath the floor was darkness.

And something else.

A smell.

Rotting earth mixed with something metallic.

He aimed his flashlight downward.

The beam revealed a narrow cavity.

Then he saw them.

Scratches.

Thousands of scratches covering the wooden supports below.

Long, desperate marks carved by fingernails.

Ethan's heart pounded.

Who had made them?

And why?

Suddenly, the whispering stopped.

The silence felt even worse.

He slowly replaced the board.

That night he could not sleep.

Every creak of the house sounded threatening.

Every shadow seemed alive.

Around 3 a.m., he heard footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Walking across the second floor.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Ethan grabbed his flashlight.

The house was supposed to be empty.

The footsteps continued.

He climbed the staircase.

Each step groaned beneath his weight.

At the top, the hallway stretched before him.

Dark.

Silent.

The footsteps had stopped.

Then one bedroom door slowly creaked open by itself.

Ethan stared.

The room beyond was pitch black.

His flashlight trembled in his hand.

Against every instinct telling him to run, he stepped inside.

The beam swept across broken furniture and peeling wallpaper.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something on the wall.

Words.

Written in faded black letters.

DON'T LISTEN.

Below it:

IT CALLS FROM UNDERNEATH.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

A sudden bang echoed from downstairs.

He jumped.

Another bang.

Then another.

The dining room.

Someone—or something—was hitting the floorboards from below.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

The entire house seemed to shake.

Ethan ran downstairs.

The noise stopped the moment he entered the dining room.

The room was empty.

But the floorboard he had replaced earlier was gone.

A dark opening waited in its place.

The smell was stronger now.

Far stronger.

And from the darkness below came a whisper.

"Help me..."

It sounded like a little girl.

Ethan's breathing quickened.

"Who's there?"

The voice answered immediately.

"Please help me."

He knew he should leave.

Every instinct screamed at him to leave.

Instead, he lowered himself into the opening.

The cavity beneath the house was larger than expected.

A narrow tunnel stretched into darkness.

The earth walls looked unnaturally smooth.

As if something had been moving through them for years.

Ethan crawled forward.

The tunnel descended deeper.

The air grew colder.

The whisper continued.

"Almost here..."

Suddenly, the tunnel widened into a chamber.

His flashlight illuminated old bones scattered across the ground.

Human bones.

Hundreds of them.

Some appeared decades old.

Others looked far newer.

Ethan stumbled backward.

Then his flashlight beam landed on the far wall.

A figure stood there.

Small.

Motionless.

A little girl wearing a white dress.

Her head hung forward.

Hair covered her face.

"Ethan..."

She lifted her head.

The face beneath the hair wasn't human.

Its mouth stretched impossibly wide.

Its eyes were empty black holes.

The creature smiled.

And every whisper he had heard came from its mouth at once.

Hundreds of voices.

Thousands.

Layered together.

The sound was unbearable.

Ethan screamed and turned to run.

But the tunnel behind him had disappeared.

Only solid earth remained.

The creature began walking toward him.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Its smile widened.

More voices joined the chorus.

Men.

Women.

Children.

All whispering the same words.

"Stay with us."

His flashlight died.

Darkness swallowed everything.

The last thing Ethan heard was the whisper directly beside his ear.

"We've been waiting for you."

Three weeks later, Ethan's abandoned car was discovered outside the house.

Police searched the property.

They found his backpack.

His camera.

His sleeping bag.

But no sign of Ethan.

The official report listed him as missing.

The case remains unsolved.

The house still stands on Willow Creek Road.

Empty.

Silent.

Waiting.

And according to local legend, if you press your ear against the dining room floor at midnight, you can hear dozens of voices whispering beneath the boards.

One of them sounds exactly like Ethan Parker.
