The Walking Dead Review

So I didn't put up a review for the previous episode so I'm coming the last two in this article.

The Walking Dead returned from its midseason hiatus.

When we left them last the group sent out to get rid of Alpha’s herd of walkers found themselves trapped in a cave with thousands of walkers.

And, Negan had wormed his way into the Whisperers after breaking out of Alexandria.

Like many Walking Dead midseason finales our characters are left in an impossible scenario and you’re wondering how they will get out.

So spoilers for last night’s episode of The Walking Dead

Most of the episode focused on Daryl’s group in the cave, but Negan's entry in the Whisperers was also covered.

Negan tries to ingratiate himself with Alpha by pointing that she might have a spy. She doesn’t take kindly to it and threatens to remove a certain part of his anatomy. He also ends up falling into the latrine, which considering all the things Negan’s done was fair.

And considering the Whisperers' lack of laundry facilities, I don’t know how he’ll ever get those clothes clean again.

But, he wormed his way into Alpha’s head and now she thinks the spy came from her inner circle, which is true. Gamma told Aaron where the herd was after she saw Lydia was alive.

So, I assume Gamma’s days are numbered, especially with Beta on her trail.

Negan is then led to the edge of camp and he for sure thinks this is the end.

No more talking his way out of things.

No more slowly getting into people’s heads.

Instead, Alpha orders him to strip and then they engage in one of TV’s weirder sex scenes. It also might have been foreshadowing from a storyline in the comics.

The other half of the episode deals with the group in the cave.

I admit I truly wondered how they would get out of there. I figured someone would find them.

Instead, they decide to jump across some pretty conveniently placed rocks. It looked like the worst game of Frogger ever.

The crawling through the cave parts was terrifying, and as a big guy I felt for Jerry I thought he was a goner.

But, like it true Walking Dead fashion it was a bait and switch. Connie and Magna are either trapped or crushed in the collapsed mine.

Daryl blames Carol and he’s kind of right. Her quest for revenge nearly killed all of them and looks to have killed the woman Daryl had feelings for.

On to last night’s episode.

I thought this was a pretty good episode. In the last two shows, The Walking Dead has remembered it’s a horror show and really leaned into it. The last episode played with claustrophobia and this episode became a Jason movie.

Beta is tasked with infiltrating Alexandria and at first, I wondered how the hulking monstrous figure would sneak in anywhere.

Turns out they have found the tunnels that run under Alexandria.

The whole sequence with Beta breaking in was fantastic. This show is at it’s best when there’s no dialogue. The way the Whisperers on the bus came to life made them look like zombies. Then Beta drops into the darkness with only the flame from the lantern to light him.

And then that terrifying scene where he reaches through the grave was magical. Plus, it was a great nod to classic zombie films where often the dead would rise from the cemetery.

He then goes on a one-man murdering spree through Alexandria. Somehow everyone in Alexandria is still next to useless this far into the apocalypse. Though you could say the last few years seem to have been pretty calm, still Beta takes quite a few out pretty easily.

It took me a second to realize what he was doing when it looked like he was meditating, but he waits for the dead people to turn. It was a pretty clever way to attack Alexandria from the inside. To be honest, he could have taken out a lot more and nearly done the settlement in. But, it was just a ruse to get to Gamma.

She escapes due to Judith’s intervention and then gives herself up to save Rosita.

Father Gabriel’s group finds them. Beta runs off and I thought for sure Gabriel was about to off here since he was channeling season 5 Rick so much I was expecting him to grow a beard and start asking about “Coral.”

There were also hijinks with Daryl and Alpha.

It was pretty boring. I didn’t think Daryl was going to die and I don’t really like Alpha that much and I think it would be better if we saw less of her.

We’ve had three megalomaniacal villains. I almost wish Beta was the main villain, just a force of nature they can’t seem to stop who keeps using the walkers in new ways so they feel like a threat again.

Random Thoughts

Is Alpha dead? I couldn’t tell.

Daryl should have definitely died on blood loss if it was spurting like that.

I thought Beta was dead after Judith shot him. She should have popped him once in the head for good measure CONSIDERING THIS IS A UNIVERSE WHERE PEOPLE COME BACK AS FLESH EATING MONSTERS

Plus tiny little Judith being the one to take out Ryan Hurst’s hulking Beta would be great.

They seem to be really low on ammo. I wonder if Eugene can’t make anymore bullets.
