The Voice Beneath the Floorboards

Every night at exactly 3:13 A.M., someone whispered his name from beneath the wooden floor.

Daniel never believed in haunted houses.

He believed in termites, broken pipes, old wiring, and neighbors who made too much noise. Ghosts belonged in movies and internet forums—not in real life.

That confidence disappeared three nights after he inherited his late grandfather's abandoned farmhouse.

The property sat alone at the edge of Black Hollow, surrounded by dying trees that blocked most of the sunlight. The locals avoided the road after sunset. When Daniel asked why, the only answer he ever received was, "The house remembers."

He laughed.

On his first night, everything seemed normal.

The second night, he heard slow footsteps in the attic.

He searched every room.

Nothing.

No animals.

No intruders.

Just dust.

On the third night, at exactly 3:13 A.M., he woke to a whisper.

"Dani...el..."

It sounded as though someone was speaking through the floor beneath his bed.

He froze.

Again.

"Daniel..."

The voice wasn't loud.

It wasn't threatening.

It sounded... desperate.

The next morning he convinced himself he had dreamed it.

Until he noticed muddy handprints beneath the bed.

Not on the floor.

On the underside of the wooden planks.

As if someone below had pressed both hands upward.

Ignoring the strange discovery, Daniel continued renovating the farmhouse.

While replacing damaged floorboards in the dining room, his hammer slipped through rotten wood.

Below wasn't dirt.

It was another room.

A hidden chamber.

There was no staircase leading to it.

No entrance.

Only darkness.

His flashlight revealed faded furniture, children's toys, and walls covered in scratched words.

DON'T ANSWER HIM.

Hundreds of times.

Written over each other.

Some letters were carved so deeply that pieces of wood had splintered away.

In one corner sat a rusted tape recorder.

The batteries had long died, but after cleaning the contacts, it somehow powered on.

The recording crackled.

His grandfather's voice filled the room.

"If you're hearing this... you opened the floor."

Daniel stopped breathing.

"I couldn't kill it."

"It doesn't haunt this house."

"It lives beneath it."

A loud bang interrupted the recording.

His grandfather began whispering.

"If it knows your name... leave now."

The tape ended.

That night Daniel packed everything.

He didn't care about the inheritance anymore.

As he reached the front door, the whisper returned.

"Daniel..."

This time...

It came from upstairs.

Then downstairs.

Then behind him.

Then inside his own head.

The lights died.

Every door slammed shut.

The house became completely silent.

Then came scratching.

Hundreds of fingernails scraping beneath every floorboard simultaneously.

The wood began bulging upward.

Tiny gaps appeared between the planks.

Eyes stared through them.

Hundreds of human eyes.

Blinking.

Watching.

Smiling.

Daniel ran toward a window and smashed it with a chair.

It wouldn't break.

Neither would the others.

The house had become a cage.

The whisper changed.

"We're lonely."

Children's voices joined in.

"So lonely..."

The floor suddenly collapsed beneath him.

Daniel crashed into the hidden chamber.

Only...

It wasn't the same room anymore.

It stretched endlessly into darkness.

Rows of people stood silently against the walls.

None of them moved.

Each wore old-fashioned clothing from different centuries.

Every face looked terrified.

Every mouth had been sewn shut.

A little girl stepped forward.

Unlike the others, she could still speak.

"You answered."

Daniel shook his head.

"I never answered."

She smiled.

"You came downstairs."

The walls began breathing.

The wooden beams twisted like ribs.

Something enormous shifted beneath the earth.

A single eye—larger than a car—slowly opened beneath the chamber floor.

It stared directly into Daniel's soul.

Thousands of whispers merged into one voice.

"Stay."

The farmhouse above groaned.

Outside, neighbors later reported hearing only one loud sound.

A door closing.

Months passed.

The property was listed for sale once again.

No one knew what had happened to Daniel.

The police found his truck.

His wallet.

His phone.

Everything remained untouched.

Except the house.

Inside the dining room, fresh words had appeared beneath the floorboards.

Written in wet mud.

HE KNOWS YOUR NAME NOW.

Last week...

The farmhouse finally found another owner.

The real estate photos looked beautiful.

Bright windows.

Fresh paint.

New wooden floors.

If you look closely at the final listing photo...

You can almost see two muddy hands pressing upward...

Waiting for someone else to come home.
