It is also known as the vanishing lady too. It is one of the oldest urban legends told regarding travel. There is also evidence that this story became well-known at the end of the nineteenth century. This urban legend started to get famous in the 20th century. A mother and daughter travel from Great Britain to Paris, which is located in France. All of a sudden, the mother of the daughter got sick, so the daughter booked a room in the nearby hotel, which would help her mother to get some rest.

Then, with the help of the hotel management, she arranged for a doctor to look over her mother. After looking at the mother's condition, the doctor suggested some medicine to the mother. Later that evening, she went out of the hotel to buy the medicines prescribed by the doctor. While going out, she asked the hotel management to take care of her mother. She did not know French, so it took so long for her to buy the medicines prescribed by the doctor. When she came back, she had many surprises waiting for her. One of them is that it totally changed. It felt like she was entering a different hotel when she walked past the entrance.

Then she went to the room where her mother was. That room was also totally different. Her mother was also not there. She looked in every corner of the room for her mother. She then started asking about the events with the hotel management, but the management did not recognize her. They even checked the register. The register said that the room was empty. She even tried contacting the doctor who treated her mother, but the doctor said that he did not remember treating anybody in that place. She even showed the prescription from the doctor; he denied that too. He said he did not write it.

Every situation around her started to panic her; the disappearance of her mother, the change of hotel, and the denial from the doctor regarding the treatment. The whole situation made her panic too. But she started noticing that something was not going right. So she went down to the British embassy in Paris to check the details of their arrival. But to her surprise, there was no record of her mother and herself traveling from Britain to Paris. The embassy officer started thinking whether she was from Britain or else she was lying.

After hearing this, she even started panicking more. After coming to a calm state, she then explained everything to the officers present at the embassy. But the people at the embassy were not ready to hear her story. She tried her best to explain her position, but that did not work out well. The officer at the embassy called the French police and reported her, then the police officer took her to the police station. When the police questioned her, she kept saying the same incident over and over. The police started investigating the case but did not find even a simple clue. They thought she must be mentally disturbed, so they transferred her to a mental asylum.

Before even realizing her situation, she was thrown into the mental asylum. Even there, she tried to explain her situation to the people who speak English there. The people at the asylum also tried to solve this case but did not find anything. She went into depression in the following years because of the sadness and fear. Eventually, she died of excess depression. Till her death, nobody else knew who she was except for her.

There are many variations of this urban legend. The one we said above was one of the famous versions of it. In one variation, it says it was brother and sister who came to Paris for a world exhibition. In another variation, it says that she became mentally stable after years and went back to Britain, but no one knew what happened to her mother.
