The Thing in the House
Some doors should never be opened.

Maya had always hated her grandmother’s old house. The place smelled like mothballs, forgotten memories, and something else... something rotten, hidden deep in the walls. But after her grandmother's funeral, she had no choice but to stay the night alone.
The first few hours were quiet, except for the old wooden clock ticking louder than usual. At midnight, the power cut out. The house sank into an unnatural darkness. The kind of black that eats up sound and space.
Then came the tapping.
Soft, irregular, almost like rain on glass. But the sky was dry, and the sound wasn’t coming from the windows. It was from the attic.
Curiosity won over fear. She grabbed her flashlight and climbed the creaking stairs. At the attic door, the tapping stopped. Slowly, she pushed it open.
Nothing.
Only dust-covered trunks and broken furniture. But then her flashlight flickered. In the dim beam, she saw it: claw marks on the floor, leading to a corner where the shadows were unnaturally thick.
A whisper slithered into her ear: "I never left."
Maya spun around, but the room was empty. She sprinted back downstairs, heart pounding, locking the attic door behind her. But the whispering continued, now inside her head.
The next morning, the neighbors found her sitting on the front porch, pale and shivering, her eyes glassy and distant. She couldn’t speak — just pointed at the house.
The attic window stood open, the curtains swaying like something had finally climbed out.
And the claw marks on the floor? Fresh as the day before.
