In the state of Washington, not far from Ellensburg, there is a strange and forbidden hole. No one dares go near this hole. And those whose curiosity have surpassed their fears can only speculate its existence.

Some say that the government has long since closed it off, erasing any evidence of its existence from maps.

But those who’ve witnessed it for themselves and the strange paranormal encounters surrounding it, will tell you, it is very real!

Mel's Hole

It is Washington’s most well known urban legends.

February 21, 1997

The urban legend originated from stories a man named Mel Waters (hence the name of the hole) told of a strange bottomless pit located on his property. This bottomless pit had become a place where the locals could dispose of unwanted things. Trash, broken appliances. Even dead animals were reported to be tossed in.

The strange thing about Mel’s hole was that with all the trash and other unwanted objects tossed in, the hole never filled up. Even stranger, no one has ever heard the thump of an object hitting the bottom.

Mel had even taken the investigation of the mysterious hole into his own hands and decided to measure its depth for himself. With a fishing line and a weight attached, he measured the hole, feeding the line down a thousand or so feet and then another and another before feeding a full 79,000 feet of line down the hole. The weight never reached the bottom.

Mel’s hole appeared to be a literal bottomless pit!

Strange. But that was just the beginning!

Those who’ve experienced Mel’s hole would swear it has supernatural abilities. Abilities that defy all logic and possibility.

Resurrection Powers

One of Mel’s neighbor’s hunting dogs had died for reasons unknown. Like many who had done so, his neighbor disposed of his deceased dog into Mel’s hole. That should have been the end of that. Except a few days later, the neighbor saw a dog that looked eerily similar to his deceased dog in the woods surrounding Mel’s hole. He would have brushed it off as a coincidence but the dog had the same collar that his deceased dog had worn.

Though knowing it was impossible, the man approached the dog, knowing without a doubt that it was his. Strangely, the dog even appeared to be afraid of him as though he had never seen the man in his life.

Mel’s hole has been claimed to bring any dead animals tossed into the hole back from the dead. The most eerie and disturbing part about this phenomenon was that the animal resurrected was not the same.

Mel’s neighbor’s dog was certainly not the same. Some even claim that it might have been an alternate reality of the dog.

Any animals whether wild or domesticated refused to go near the hole. Perhaps they could sense something humans couldn’t.

Electronic Malfunctioning

Any electronic devices that came in contact with Mel’s hole would malfunction. Radio signals became distorted. But that wasn’t the strangest part. In the midst of the radio distortion, eerie and unfamiliar languages cut in. Languages no one could recognize.

Metal Transformations

Any metals that came in close contact would transform into other metals. Brass changed to silver and copper into steel. It was as though Mel’s hole was a hot spot for supernatural sorcery.

Perhaps most chillingly, those who’ve dared ventured close to the hole out of their own curiosity have claimed to have heard distant screams coming from below.

Just a legend?

Over time, curiosity seekers and paranormal investigators alike have searched for Mel’s hole. Even through the most extensive search, no proof could be found of Mel’s hole. There wasn’t even any evidence that a man named Mel Waters ever existed.

And yet Mel’s hole, like many, will continue to live on in the realm of urban legends.

The urban legend of Mel’s hole was first featured on the radio show Coast to Coast.
