"The Silent Caller" pt.2

When the loop closes, the truth is far darker than you ever imagined.

The darkness was suffocating. My mind spun in a whirlwind of terror and confusion as I struggled to process what had just happened. I wasn’t alone, but I couldn’t see. My phone buzzed weakly in the pitch-black void, the screen flickering erratically. The same message repeated, over and over: "You were warned." My breath hitched, every nerve in my body on edge. Then, out of the silence, a low, guttural whisper came from everywhere and nowhere at once.

“You’ve gone too far this time,” it said in my voice—but warped, fragmented, and hollow, as if it was being pulled apart as it spoke.

“Who are you? What do you want?” I screamed into the darkness, but my words felt like they were swallowed before they could echo back. Suddenly, the phone’s light illuminated a face—mine. The doppelgänger from the closet was now inches away, its grin stretched impossibly wide. I scrambled back, but I couldn’t seem to move far enough. My hands met cold, hard walls that hadn’t been there before.

“This isn’t real,” I whispered to myself, trying to anchor my sanity.

“Oh, it’s very real,” the doppelgänger hissed, its voice twisting into something monstrous. It leaned closer, the light from the phone casting jagged shadows across its distorted features. “And it’s all because of you.”

“What do you mean? I didn’t do anything!” I shouted, though the words felt hollow even as I said them.

It laughed, a chilling sound that reverberated through the void. “Oh, but you did. You opened the door. You let me in. And now…” It gestured around the confined space. “You can never leave.”

The walls began to shift, closing in, and the air grew colder. The phone buzzed again, and this time the screen displayed something new: “Play the voicemail.” My hand shook violently as I opened the message. It was my own voice, terrified and desperate, whispering words I didn’t remember saying:

“Don’t trust it. It’s not me. Destroy the phone before it’s too late.”

The phone slipped from my hands, and I stared at the doppelgänger, its grin now fading into a look of cold fury. “You think you can stop this?” it growled. The space around me trembled, the walls splitting open like cracks in glass. Behind the fractures, there was nothing—just an infinite abyss that threatened to swallow me whole.

Desperation overtook me. I lunged for the phone, but the doppelgänger moved faster, its hand grabbing my wrist with an icy grip. Its touch burned, freezing and searing at once. “You can’t undo what’s been done,” it said, its voice echoing with a thousand overlapping tones. “But you can take my place.”

“What?” I stammered, struggling against its hold.

“It’s simple,” it said, dragging me closer. “You wanted to understand. You wanted answers. Well, here they are—this is the cost of your curiosity.” Its form began to change, its shadowy features melting away to reveal… me. It was no longer a monster, but an exact replica, every detail perfect. It pulled me toward the fissures in the walls, where the void waited hungrily.

“No! Wait!” I screamed, but it was too late.

With a violent shove, it pushed me through the cracks. The cold consumed me, and for a moment, I felt nothing but weightless dread. Then, the void spit me back out—into my own apartment. The light was back, the air still and familiar. Everything looked exactly as it had before the call. My phone lay on the table, its screen dark and lifeless.

I exhaled shakily, my hands trembling as I reached for the phone. The moment my fingers touched it, the screen lit up. The reflection staring back at me wasn’t mine.

It was the doppelgänger’s.

The phone buzzed one final time, displaying a single message: “It’s your turn now.”

And then the door to the closet creaked open.

The End.
