"The Silent Caller" pt.1
When the phone rings in the dead of night, some calls should never be answered.

The phone rang at 3:17 a.m.—a number I didn’t recognize, but one I couldn’t ignore. Something about the sound felt wrong. It wasn’t just the hour or the unfamiliar number; it was the way the ringing seemed louder than it should be, like it wanted to fill every corner of my quiet apartment. I hesitated, staring at the screen, where the caller ID read only "Unknown." Against my better judgment, I answered. “Hello?” My voice cracked as I pressed the phone to my ear. For a moment, there was nothing but static, a faint crackling noise that made my skin crawl. Then, a voice—a raspy whisper, barely audible—cut through the silence. “Do you remember me?” it said. My heart skipped. “Who is this?” The line went dead, but the unease lingered. Telling myself it was just a prank, I set the phone down. As I reached to turn off the bedside lamp, the phone rang again. Same number. Same tone that felt too loud, too invasive. This time, I answered in anger. “Stop calling me!” I shouted into the receiver, but there was no static now. Just the voice, calm and unnervingly close. “I’m here.”
The words clung to the air, tightening the grip of fear in my chest. My eyes darted around the room, but everything appeared as it should. “Who are you?” I whispered. The voice responded with chilling simplicity: “You let me in.” The call disconnected, and I sat there, frozen, clutching the phone like it was the only thing keeping me tethered to reality. I tried to rationalize what was happening, but then I saw the notification: "One new voicemail." My breath caught in my throat as I opened it. The recording began with silence, broken only by faint breathing. And then, the whisper: “I’ve been waiting, just like you said. I never left.” My stomach dropped. I didn’t know anyone who would leave a message like that, and yet it felt pointed, deliberate. I put the phone down, trying to think, when I noticed something shift in the corner of the room. A shadow, subtle but distinct, moved against the wall. I shot my gaze toward it, my heart racing, but the bulb of the bedside lamp flickered and then died, plunging the room into darkness.
My phone buzzed again in my hand. Another voicemail. My fingers trembled as I pressed play, my breath shallow, the weight of the unknown pressing against me like a physical force. This time, there was no prelude, no ambient sound—just the voice. “Turn around,” it whispered, sharper than before, commanding and cold. I froze, unable to comply, fear rooting me to the spot. Then I felt it—a cold breath brushing the back of my neck. My body screamed at me to move, but I was paralyzed, caught in the vortex of terror the voice had woven. Slowly, as though not of my own will, I began to turn. Whatever waited behind me had been waiting far longer than I realized.
