the story

It was a cold winter night, and Emily was sitting in her living room, staring at the fireplace. The logs crackled and popped as she tried to get warm, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced up at the staircase and saw a dark shadowy figure standing at the top of the stairs. It was too dark to see its face, but she could feel its presence.

Emily was alone in the house, or so she thought. She tried to ignore the shadow, thinking it was just her imagination. She got up to make some hot chocolate and turned on some music to calm her nerves. As she was in the kitchen, she felt a chill run down her spine. She looked over her shoulder and saw the shadow again, but this time, it was closer. It was now halfway down the stairs, and she could see it more clearly.

It was a tall, thin figure with long arms and fingers that ended in sharp claws. Its eyes glowed red, and it had a sinister grin on its face. Emily tried to scream, but no sound came out. The shadow started to move towards her, and she stumbled back, hitting her head on the counter.

When Emily opened her eyes, she was lying on the kitchen floor, with the shadow standing over her. It reached out and touched her forehead with its icy fingers, and she felt a jolt of pain shoot through her body. The shadow started to speak, and its voice was like nails on a chalkboard.

"I have been waiting for you, Emily. You can't escape me. I will follow you wherever you go, and I will never let you go."

Emily tried to crawl away, but the shadow grabbed her by the ankle and dragged her back towards the stairs. She could feel its cold breath on her neck and the sound of its laughter echoing in her ears.

As they reached the top of the stairs, Emily saw a faint light in the distance. It was a small candle that was flickering in the darkness. She tried to move towards it, but the shadow held her back.

"You can't leave, Emily. You are mine now. Forever."

Suddenly, the candle flickered brighter, and Emily could see a figure walking towards them. It was an old woman, dressed in a long white gown. She was holding a rosary and a bible, and she was reciting prayers under her breath.

The shadow hissed and recoiled as the woman approached. She held out the rosary and started to chant. The shadow started to shrink and fade away until it was gone, leaving Emily alone on the stairs.

The old woman helped Emily to her feet and walked her back to the living room. She explained that the shadow was a demon, and it had been following Emily for a long time. She said that she had been sent by the church to perform an exorcism and rid Emily of the demon.

Emily was still shaken, but she felt relieved that the shadow was gone. She thanked the old woman and watched as she walked out the door, disappearing into the darkness.

From that night on, Emily always made sure to keep a candle lit on the stairs, as a reminder of the light that can overcome even the darkest shadows.
