It was a dark and stormy night, and the wind was howling outside. Mary had just moved into a new house on the edge of town, and she was feeling nervous. The house was old and creaky, and it had a strange energy that made her skin crawl.

As she was getting ready for bed, Mary heard strange noises coming from the attic. She tried to ignore it, but the sounds grew louder and more persistent. Eventually, she couldn't take it anymore and decided to investigate.

As she climbed the stairs to the attic, she could feel her heart pounding in her chest. When she reached the top, she saw a figure standing in the corner of the room. It was shrouded in darkness, and Mary couldn't make out any features.

"Who are you?" she asked, her voice shaking with fear.

There was no answer. The figure just stood there, looming over her.

Mary felt a chill run down her spine, and she tried to back away. But as she did, she realized that the figure was getting closer. Its arms stretched out toward her, and she could see now that its hands were twisted and claw-like.

Mary screamed and ran down the stairs as fast as she could. She could hear the figure chasing her, its footsteps pounding on the wooden floorboards.

When she reached the bottom, Mary slammed the door shut and locked it. She was panting and gasping for breath, and her heart felt like it was going to burst.

The figure continued to scratch at the door, trying to get in. Mary knew that she had to do something, or it would only be a matter of time before the figure broke through.

With trembling hands, she reached for the phone and dialed 911. As she waited for the operator to answer, Mary could hear the figure's growls and snarls outside the door.

When the operator finally picked up, Mary screamed into the phone, begging for help. The operator assured her that the police were on their way, but Mary knew that it might already be too late.

The figure continued to scratch and claw at the door, and Mary knew that she was running out of time. She grabbed a nearby lamp and prepared to defend herself.

Just as the figure broke through the door, the police arrived. They tackled the figure and handcuffed it, revealing it to be a crazed, deranged killer who had been hiding in the attic for months.

Mary was shaken but relieved. She had narrowly escaped with her life, and she knew that she would never forget the horror of that night.

In the days that followed, Mary couldn't shake the feeling that something was still off about the house. She would wake up in the middle of the night, convinced that she had heard something moving in the shadows.

She tried to brush it off as residual fear from the incident in the attic, but the feeling persisted. It was as if the house was haunted by something sinister, and it was getting stronger with each passing day.

One evening, as Mary was cooking dinner, she heard a loud crash coming from the basement. She hesitated for a moment, but then she summoned up the courage to investigate.

As she descended the creaky stairs, she could feel her heart pounding in her chest. When she reached the bottom, she saw that one of the windows had been smashed in, and the room was freezing cold.

Suddenly, Mary heard a whispering voice coming from the darkness. She couldn't make out what it was saying, but the tone was menacing and malevolent.

Mary's blood ran cold, and she knew that she had to get out of the house. She ran up the stairs and out the front door, not stopping until she was several blocks away.

As she caught her breath, Mary realized that she couldn't go back to that house. It was cursed, and there was no way to shake off the feeling of dread that hung over it like a dark cloud.

She packed her things and left the house, never looking back. The memory of that night would stay with her forever, a constant reminder of the shadow that lurked in the darkness.
