It was a dark and stormy night, and the only sound was the incessant pounding of rain against the windows. Mary had always been afraid of storms, but tonight was different. There was a feeling of dread that permeated the air, a sense that something was coming. She tried to shake it off and distract herself with a book, but the unease only grew stronger.

As the night wore on, Mary began to hear strange noises. It sounded like footsteps, slow and deliberate, coming from the hallway. She tried to convince herself that it was just the old house settling, but the creaking seemed too purposeful for that. She got up to investigate, but found nothing out of the ordinary. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.

As she returned to her room, she noticed something odd. The door was slightly ajar, and she was sure that she had closed it all the way. She pushed it open slowly, her heart pounding in her chest. What she saw made her blood run cold. A figure stood in the corner of the room, shrouded in darkness. It was tall and thin, with long limbs and a twisted, grotesque face. Mary tried to scream, but no sound came out.

The figure began to move toward her, its movements slow and deliberate. Mary tried to back away, but her legs wouldn't move. She was frozen in place, unable to escape the thing that was creeping toward her. The figure reached out with one long, bony hand and touched her cheek. It was cold and clammy, sending shivers down her spine.

Then suddenly, the figure disappeared, leaving Mary alone in her room. She collapsed onto her bed, trembling with fear. She knew that she couldn't stay in this house any longer. But when she tried to leave, she found that the doors were all locked from the outside. She was trapped, with no way out.

The storm outside grew more intense, the winds howling and the rain pounding against the roof. Mary knew that she was not alone in the house. She could feel a presence watching her, waiting for her to make a move. She tried to keep calm and rational, but the fear was overwhelming.

Then, she heard a voice. It was a soft, almost soothing voice, but it sent chills down her spine. It whispered in her ear, promising her safety and security if she would just give in. Mary knew that she couldn't trust the voice, but it was so seductive. She felt herself being drawn in, losing her grip on reality.

As the night wore on, Mary's sanity began to slip away. She saw things that she couldn't explain, heard voices that whispered to her from the shadows. She tried to hold on, but the terror was too great. And then, just when she thought she couldn't take any more, the storm began to die down. The rain slowed to a trickle, and the winds calmed.

Mary took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. She looked around the room, half expecting to see the figure again. But it was gone, and she was alone. Slowly, she made her way to the door, and this time it opened easily. She stepped out into the hallway, and the house was quiet.

As she made her way downstairs, Mary realized that the storm had passed. The sun was beginning to rise, casting a soft glow over the landscape. She stepped outside, feeling the cool air on her skin. The world was new again, washed clean by the rain. Mary looked back at the house, and for a moment she thought she saw the figure in the window, watching her go.

She knew that she would never forget that night, that feeling of terror
