The Night My Reflection Didn’t Copy Me
One night, the narrator notices their reflection in the mirror acting independently—smiling at the wrong moments and silently begging for help.

It started with something so small I almost laughed it off.
I was brushing my teeth, half-asleep, barely aware of myself, when I noticed it—the faintest delay in the mirror. My hand moved, but my reflection followed a second too late.
I froze.
The buzzing in my head—thoughts, worries, unfinished conversations—suddenly went quiet. I blinked slowly, watching carefully this time. I raised my hand again.
This time, it moved with me. Perfectly.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.
“Just tired,” I muttered to myself, foam at the corner of my lips. “You need sleep.”
I rinsed, turned off the light, and went to bed.
But something had already shifted.
---
The next night, it happened again.
Only this time, it wasn’t a delay.
I was standing in front of the mirror, tying my hair back, when I saw it.
My reflection… was smiling.
I wasn’t.
My face was neutral—tired, distant, the kind of expression you don’t even notice you’re wearing anymore. But in the mirror, my reflection held a soft, almost knowing smile.
Not wide. Not creepy.
Just… wrong.
A chill slid down my spine.
Slowly, I forced my lips upward into a smile.
The reflection’s smile faded.
Now we matched.
I dropped my hands.
The reflection did too.
Everything was normal again.
Except it wasn’t.
---
I avoided mirrors the next day.
It sounds ridiculous, I know. But once something feels off like that, you don’t want confirmation—you want denial.
I caught glimpses of myself in windows, in my phone screen, in the back of a spoon while washing dishes. Each time, everything seemed fine.
Perfectly normal.
But that night…
That night, I couldn’t avoid it.
---
The bathroom light flickered as I turned it on.
I stood there for a moment, staring at the sink, refusing to look up.
“Get it together,” I whispered.
It’s just your mind.
It’s stress. Lack of sleep. Overthinking.
Finally, I looked up.
And for a moment… everything was fine.
My reflection stared back at me, expression blank, mirroring me exactly.
I let out a shaky breath.
Then, slowly—
It tilted its head.
I didn’t.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
I stayed completely still, not daring to move.
But the reflection… it kept watching me. Its eyes were focused, intense, like it was seeing me for the first time.
Then it did something worse.
It raised its hand.
I didn’t.
It pressed its palm flat against the inside of the mirror.
My breath caught.
For a second, neither of us moved.
Then I stumbled backward, nearly slipping on the tiles. My chest tightened, panic rising so fast I couldn’t control it.
“No,” I whispered. “No, no, no…”
When I looked again—
It was normal.
Just me.
Standing there, pale, shaking, eyes wide with fear.
---
I didn’t sleep that night.
Or the next.
Because once you see something like that, you don’t unsee it. It lingers in your mind, replaying, growing sharper each time.
By the third night, I was exhausted.
And that’s when it came back.
---
I stood in front of the mirror again.
I don’t know why. Maybe I needed to prove to myself that I wasn’t losing my mind.
Maybe I already knew.
This time, there was no delay. No subtle difference.
The moment I looked up—
It was already different.
My reflection wasn’t copying me.
It was watching me.
There was something in its eyes… something heavy. Desperate.
It looked like me, exactly like me.
But it felt like a stranger.
Slowly, it raised its hand again.
Not in a mirror motion—no.
It moved first.
And then it pressed its palm against the glass.
I swallowed hard, my throat dry.
“Stop,” I whispered.
It didn’t.
Instead, its lips parted.
And though no sound came out…
I could read the words.
*Help me.*
My blood ran cold.
I shook my head, stepping back. “No… this isn’t real.”
But it didn’t stop.
It started mouthing words faster now, urgency flooding its expression.
*You don’t understand.*
*You’re not supposed to be there.*
My heart skipped.
“What?” I whispered, barely audible.
Its eyes widened, like it couldn’t believe I responded.
Then, slowly, carefully, it formed the words again.
*You’re not supposed to be there.*
A ringing filled my ears.
“What do you mean?” My voice cracked. “This is my life. My body.”
The reflection’s face twisted—pain, fear, something deeper.
Then it shook its head.
And whispered silently:
*No.*
The lights flickered.
For a second, the entire room dimmed, and when the light steadied again—
The reflection had changed.
Its face…
It looked exhausted.
Hollow.
Like it had been trapped somewhere for a very long time.
And then I understood.
Or at least… a part of me did.
“What if…” I whispered slowly, fear creeping into every word, “what if I’m the reflection?”
The moment I said it—
Everything went still.
The reflection froze.
Then, slowly… it smiled.
Not the soft, wrong smile from before.
This one was different.
Relieved.
Grateful.
Its hand pressed harder against the mirror.
And for a brief, terrifying second—
I felt something press back against my own palm.
From the *inside.*
I gasped, yanking my hand away.
“No. No, no, no—”
The reflection was moving now, faster, more urgent.
*Stay.*
*Don’t let me out.*
My head spun.
“What happens if you come out?” I asked, my voice barely holding together.
It stopped.
For a long moment, it just stared at me.
Then slowly…
It formed one final sentence.
*You disappear.*
The lights went out.
---
When they came back on, everything was normal again.
My reflection stood there, copying me perfectly.
No movement. No difference.
Just me.
Exactly as I should be.
---
I haven’t told anyone.
How could I?
But sometimes, late at night, when the house is quiet and the world feels distant…
I stand in front of the mirror again.
And I watch carefully.
Because every now and then—
Just for a second—
I see it hesitate.
Like it’s waiting.
Like it’s hoping.
And sometimes…
I think I am too.
