The Lake's Reflection
The Lake's Reflection
After five years of dating, Elena and Mark decided to take a much-needed vacation to a secluded cabin near Blackwater Lake. Stories of strange disappearances and ghostly sightings circulated among the townspeople, making the lake notorious in local legends. However, it was only a tranquil escape from the busy city life for Elena and Mark.
The first day went flawlessly. They hiked the nearby trails, went canoeing, and roasted marshmallows by the fire in the evening. The lake became glassy as the sun sank below the horizon, reflecting the dusk sky in a spooky silence.
"Isn't it a little too quiet?" Elena looked into the water and whispered.
Mark put an arm around her and laughed. "That's nature's beauty, sweetie. No loud neighbors or honking cars.
Nevertheless, the uneasiness that was creeping up her spine persisted.
Elena heard the gentle lapping of water later that night while she was still awake in the cabin. It sounded like something moving in the lake. She sneaked out of bed and looked out the window, but Mark was fast asleep.
There was nobody in the lake.
Then there was motion. On the beach, there was a figure. No, she wasn't just any figure. Standing barefoot at the water's edge and gazing up at the cabin with dark, hollow eyes, it was a perfect reflection of herself.
With a gasp, Elena staggered back from the window. Mark hardly stirred as she shook him, but she turned to wake him.
"Mark! Get up! Harshly, she whispered.
He opened his eyes briefly. "What's the matter?"
"Something is out there."
Mark sat up blearily and rubbed his face. "It is most likely an animal."
Elena took his hand and guided him to the window after he hesitated. But when they looked, all they saw was the rippling, silent lake.
With a drowsy smile, Mark pulled her into an embrace and said, "You're tired." "Return to your bed."
She made an effort to unwind, but she felt watched the entire time.
Elena paused the following day as they got ready to swim in the lake. Something felt off about the reflection in the water. The mirrored image of herself didn't exactly match her movements when she looked down. It was slow, as though it was observing before imitating her.
"Elena, are you entering?" Mark called, already waist-deep in the water.
.
She tried to smile. "Yes."
She inhaled deeply before intervening. She was shivering because the water was colder than she had anticipated. She swam in Mark's direction, but just as she got to him, her ankle was pulled.
She let out a gasp and went under.
Her lungs were screaming for air as she kicked frantically, panicking. Suddenly the hold came off, and she came up, spluttering and coughing.
"Elena! Are you alright? With a worried expression on his face, Mark hurried to her side.
She gasped, "S-Something pulled me under."
Mark glanced around, "Maybe you got sucked into some weeds?"
She gave a headshake. "No, it was more like hands."
Elena was unable to fall asleep that night. She sat by the fire, gazing out at the lake, hoping that something, anything, would convince her that she wasn't dreaming.
Then she noticed it.
At the water's edge is a figure.
She was the one. Once more.
This time, however, its mouth slowly opened into a twisted, unnatural smile. Then, as though the water were solid ground, it turned and walked onto the lake's surface.
"Elena," it murmured, but she couldn't hear it. But the voice kept repeating in her head. "Return."
Fear paralyzed her, making her body feel cold. After reaching the center of the lake, the reflection dove into the water without making a sound.
"Elena?" Mark startled her with his voice. She looked back to see him enter the porch. How come you're out here?
The figure was gone when she gestured toward the lake.
"I—" She paused. Would he believe her if she told him? Or would he insist that she was having another hallucination?
"Let's head inside," Mark said softly as he warmed her up with his arms. "You're freezing."
Elena had a dream about the lake that night. Of something whispering in her ear and dragging her down.
"I need you to step in for me."
Her heart was racing when she woke up. Something felt different, even though Mark was still sleeping next to her. Off.
She turned her head slowly in the direction of the mirror on the other wall.
Her image remained stationary.
Rather, it fixed her with those same dark, hollow eyes.
After that, it grinned.
