Emma and Lucas had always wanted to spend a quiet weekend away from the city. It seemed like destiny when Emma's coworker offered them her family's remote lake house. With ivy creeping up the wooden siding and a misty lake just beyond the trees, the cabin stood quietly and beautifully, unaltered by time, deep in the woods.
Emma remarked, "This is ideal," as they put their bags down and entered. The house had faded photos on the walls, worn furniture, and a dusty, old pine smell.
Lucas laughed. "I adore it, but it has that eerie movie vibe."
They settled into the silence after unpacking and building a fire. Just the crackling of logs and the gentle hoot of an owl outside—no internet, no cell service. They drank too much wine, laughed, and toasted marshmallows. It was the kind of night that seemed to mark the beginning of something lovely and new.
But Emma woke up at about two in the morning.
Her heart was pounding as she lay in bed, still half-drunk. From somewhere in the house came a gentle tapping. Press. Press. Press. She pushed Lucas.
"Have you heard that?"
Lucas awoke drowsily. "What?"
"That pressing."
They paid attention. Nothing. just the windowpanes being brushed by the wind.
He muttered, "Probably a tree branch," and collapsed back onto the pillow.
Emma tried to go back to sleep, but the tapping came back, louder, more rhythmic, more purposeful.
She slipped into the hallway after getting up and draping a blanket over her shoulders. Outside, it was colder. Now it was more obvious that the tapping was coming from downstairs.
Emma walked slowly down the stairs. The fire had long since gone out, and the living room was deserted. Unnaturally, the shadows appeared to stretch and twist.
The kitchen was the source of the tapping.
She stopped as she turned the corner.
Every cabinet door was ajar.
Each and every one.
Her heart thumping, she stood motionless. The silence was then broken by a loud BANG—one of the cabinet doors suddenly slammed shut by itself.
She hurried back to the upper floor.
Emma attempted to explain what had happened the following morning, but Lucas brushed it off.
He sipped his coffee and remarked, "You had a nightmare." "This location is historic. These kinds of houses pop and creak.
Emma scowled. Lucas, the doors were open. I never thought of that.
"All right, perhaps someone stayed here before us and failed to properly close them."
She didn't continue to argue, but something didn't feel right.
They hiked in the woods afterwards. The lake glistened beneath a light gray sky, and the air was clear. Emma, however, continued to look over her shoulder because she felt something behind them.
"Are you alright?" Lucas enquired.
"I'm not sure. I feel like I'm being watched.
She was kissed by Lucas. "You're thinking too much. Out here, we are completely alone.
By evening, they made their way back to the cabin. The apprehension remained. The tapping resumed that evening.
Lucas also heard it this time.
The sound spread—tap, tap, tap—along the walls, and he sat up, awake.
He muttered, "It seems to be circling the house."
Emma held on to him. "I informed you."
The tapping abruptly ceased.
Then from the woods came a long, inhuman scream that rang through the night.
Breathless and pale, they gazed at one another.
Lucas said, grabbing the flashlight, "Stay here."
"Are you crazy? Avoid going outside!
He paused, caught between fear and courage. However, the lights flickered and went out before they could make a decision.
The house fell into obscurity.
Emma's voice wavered. "Lucas, someone is outside."
Two black, motionless figures, like silhouettes etched into the night, stood at the edge of the trees, visible from the window.
They remained motionless. didn't flinch.
I simply watched.
Then they vanished.
They didn't get any rest.
By morning, Emma demanded that they go.
Lucas consented, but the tires were cut when they got to the vehicle.
Lucas kicked the gravel while muttering, "No… no, no, no."
Their phones were still dead when they attempted to call for assistance. No signal was present.
Emma turned to face the cabin. The front door stood open.
"I shut that door," she muttered.
They moved cautiously closer. The house was different inside.
All the mirrors were broken.
At 3:17, all the clocks stopped.
"STAY WITH US" was written on the wall, etched into the wood.
They took a step back.
"I'm finished. "We must leave this place," Emma said.
Hoping it was still open, they followed the forest trail to the closest ranger station. The air became colder as they walked. The fog grew heavier.
Then it came to them once more.
Tap, tap, tap.
This time, though, it wasn't on wood. It was on the ground behind them. similar to footsteps.
Lucas pivoted. There was nobody.
"Run," he said.
Branches tore at their skin and clothing as they ran through the forest.
Emma then stumbled.
As Lucas turned to assist her, he noticed them.
The two figures. Now closer. pale faces. eyes that are hollow.
They let out the same high-pitched scream as their mouths opened and stretched abnormally wide.
After grabbing Emma and pulling her to the top, Lucas and Emma ran until the trees parted and the ranger station was visible.
It was deserted and locked.
But beyond it was a road.
They didn't turn around.
Authorities discovered the cabin deserted a few days later. Lucas and Emma never came back for their belongings. According to the report, the couple was discovered talking wildly about "whispers in the walls" and "watchers in the woods."
Nobody took them seriously.
However, they discovered a faded photograph beneath a loose floorboard in the attic of that lake house.
It displayed a couple. Grinning.
And two dark figures in the window behind them.
observing.
Never stops observing.
