The Hollow Smile
Sometimes, the faces you trust hide the darkest secrets.

Lena had always known her neighbor, Mrs. Hargrave, as a kind, sweet woman. She’d moved in a few years ago, and they often exchanged pleasantries in the hallway, shared recipes, and even attended neighborhood events together. But something was off that night.
It was a stormy evening when Lena received a knock at her door. She opened it to find Mrs. Hargrave standing there, drenched from the rain. Her eyes were wide, as if she had seen something she shouldn’t have.
"Could I come in?" Mrs. Hargrave asked, her voice trembling.
"Of course," Lena replied, stepping aside. She noticed Mrs. Hargrave wasn’t shivering, even though the rain had soaked through her thin coat.
Inside, Lena made tea while Mrs. Hargrave sat silently, her gaze distant. After a few moments, she asked, "Is everything okay? You seem... different."
Mrs. Hargrave looked up, her lips curling into an unsettling smile. "I’ve seen the truth now, Lena. I’ve seen the truth about you."
Lena froze, her blood running cold. The warmth of the room disappeared, and the air felt thick with tension.
“What are you talking about?” Lena asked, trying to steady her voice.
Mrs. Hargrave stood and moved toward her, her smile stretching wider. "You know, Lena... you really shouldn’t have let me in tonight."
With a quick motion, Mrs. Hargrave reached up, pulling back her own skin—revealing the hollow, empty face beneath it.
Lena stumbled back, her heart racing as she realized her mistake. She had trusted the wrong neighbor.
