The blue waters reflected the moonlight as the boat glided across the lake. The rain had stopped early. Jay drove calmly toward the infamous Chandelier Island. The desolate mansion stood apart; its shadows loomed in the distance, just as the legends stated. The old dock with only fragments of withered wood still rising barely above the water. Along the ruins, an old sunken boat marked with the greatness of its past. Once, it was the jewel of early yachts, flaunted by William Chandelier himself. Now, it lay rotten at the dock. Jay was ready for this adventure, even though there had been reports of an uneventful night. He drove to the back section where a stone platform, cracked and faded, remained. Cassie looked frail on the abandoned island. The sign stated "No Trespassing," with another message below: "I Would Not If I Were You." Jay grabbed the rope and tied off the boat to the only remaining pole. Cassie glanced at Jay, worried. He just smiled.

“Look, Misty said she had an uneventful night even in the creepy mansion, everything will be fine,” Jay commented.

Chris exited the boat with his GoPro on, filming around the dock area. Others left the boat, with Mike and Stella heading onto shore. Cassie took a deep breath as she joined the others. Jay finished tying off the boat.

“Here we go with the haunted house challenge, and this one should be the scariest with the Old William going crazy on his wife and kids, taking their lives, and rumored to be living in the woods mad,” Chris spoke his commentary.

“Welcome to my friends as we enter Chandelier Island and its many mysteries,” Chris finished his speech.

All the friends gathered as they entered the island, as the moonlight led the way. The trees seemed to be moving, but the challenge started. Cassie followed behind Jay as Chris led the charge. His camera ran out of power as they headed to the abandoned mansion. The night was dark, and the house stood throughout. Chris was still commenting as they looked at the large house and the damaged door. The windows were broken, and the structure was slightly leaning in areas. Ever since the beginning of the challenge, all looked a little scared as the door swung in the wind. The time has come to enter the stage of spending the night in a haunted house. Chris steadily found the last solid stairs as he entered first. The others came from behind to enter the entry place. It was badly damaged, with the floor torn up and some sad pair of staircases leading to the upstairs area. The room was large, with torn paintings, and even Chris looked around, camera in hand, excited. His eyes looked upstairs with anticipation of this night.

The front hall was elaborate, even with all the broken furniture. Eerie silence echoed as the group gathered to explore the mansion. They looked at each other and followed Chris into the rooms. The hall led to many damaged rooms. Broken furniture and scattered items covered the floor. Once these rooms were eloquent, before old William went mad. The meeting rooms and parlors had a devastated, classic beauty. Sounds crept in as if the house was falling apart. Cassie moved toward the door, but Jay pulled her back. The group kept watch as they explored. A glimmer from the chandelier drew them into the ballroom. Cracked mirrors. A floor full of holes. Torn art still hung, faces half gone, tracking the group as they moved. A vase shattered. The camera swung in that direction. Shaken, they left. The library was next, books spilled everywhere, and even the shelves were knocked over. Chris tried to speak, but his commentary faltered. The ladders were down, evidence of past chaos. In its heyday, it was magnificent. A book tumbled from above, sending the group quickly to the next room.

“Maybe we should call it a night before anything could happen,” Cassie stated.

“It will be fine if we stay together and finish the house,” Chris replied.

The others looked scared as they entered the old kitchen, with its large ovens and supplies scattered across the floor. Stella noticed the old deco designs. The food was long gone, but the fancy silverware was all over the floor. This place had seen better days. As something dropped in the back, but with some light, a large spoon had just fallen off the wall. The tour continued into the other parlors with the furniture and even William’s office, along with all his books thrown about the room.

“It was said that this was where the rampage started as he destroyed his own family and legacy,” Chris commented with a light voice.

A scream pierced the silence. Mike panicked, searching for Stella, who had vanished. He ran off, flashlight in hand. The others lost sight of him as they entered a hallway with a torn painting of battle. Mike was gone. Aspects of light appeared below. Chris dashed toward it, heading into the basement where the storage rooms were located. They were filled with rotted food and dead bugs everywhere. Lights still appeared in another section of the basement. Jay tripped and fell. Cassie screamed. They found Stella, her throat cut and blood fresh. Chris went quiet. The flashlight swept around. No one else was in sight, not even Mike. They hurried on, navigating more storage rooms, startled by mice. Finally, they spotted a staircase and climbed, desperate to escape the nightmare.

“I think we should leave now and call Mike to get out too,” Jay screamed.

“First, we have to find our way to a door to escape, even if it's not the front door,” Chris replied.

The group continued upstairs. A row of bedrooms lined one side, each destroyed. Beds overturned, blood where the murders happened. The rooms became fancier, scattered toys marking the kids’ quarters. Still, Mike was missing. Hallway photos hung in disrepair, as did the other rooms. None of the rooms led to the main staircase. The master bedroom was large, with bloodstains still marking the wife’s tragic fate. Everything was tossed on the floor. Mirrors shattered. They stayed only a moment, then hurried on. A bathroom’s shattered mirror reflected fresh blood all over the area. In the tub. Mike was there, stabbed to death, lifeless. Chris vomited, almost dropping the camera, as panic rose. The rest sprinted, searching for the stairs, ignoring every other room till they needed to hide. Boards creaked behind them. They ran faster, lost in a labyrinth of halls and rooms. Laughter echoed from a faint figure. The main stairwell was still out of sight. In a small, dim nursery, a voice spoke.

“Where are your friends who have come to disturb my house?” the voice said.

When it seemed the footsteps had faded, the group ran. The main stairwell came into view—damaged, but passable. Chris screamed, “Run.” Jay and Cassie sprinted down the stairs, not caring about stability, just moving. Chris gave one last scream before he fell silent. Jay grabbed Cassie. She tripped just before reaching the door. Laughter chased them. Cassie jumped up and ran, barely keeping pace. Jay escaped as the shadowy figure closed the door behind them.

“I hoped you enjoyed your stay and do not come again,” the voice screamed as all light disappeared from the house.

Jay and Cassie ran toward the boat, but it was already drifting in the water. Jay quickly pulled out his phone and called 911. Fear gripped him. The night was not over. He and Cassie ran along the beach, hoping the figure wasn’t behind. Police boats appeared in the distance. Still no guarantee of survival. The moon lingered overhead. Finally, they spotted a small cove. Inside, an old rickety boat waited. Jay motioned for Cassie to join him. She stumbled, now bleeding. He fired up the old engine after several frantic tries. Cassie collapsed, dead before him. Jay sped away before the figure could follow. He could finally breathe, but Cassie was gone. He aimed the boat straight for the police until they intercepted it. Jay passed out, eyes full of tears. Back at the island, the figure had vanished. Suddenly, a spark of light and an attack—an officer fell. Shots rang out. The lifeless body of the dark figure slumped into the yard. Jay watched, stunned by the carnage. The night was over. It was never safe. Finally, Jay lost consciousness, the threat silenced.
