THE HALLOW GROVE

A FOREST MONSTER

By federicorichardPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

A thick mist clung to the trees, winding between their gnarled trunks like the breath of something unseen. The Hollow Grove had always been a place of whispers. For years, townsfolk spoke of it in hushed tones, warning anyone who dared to venture too close. But when Naomi’s brother, Peter, didn’t return after his latest trip into the woods, she had no choice but to follow.

Naomi had grown up with stories about the forest—how it was cursed, how it twisted the minds of those who strayed too far, how it was home to monsters beyond imagination. Yet, it wasn’t until Peter disappeared that she truly began to believe.

She stood at the edge of the forest now, the branches above her swaying with a wind that seemed to echo distant whispers. Her heart pounded in her chest as she stepped forward, the ground soft beneath her boots. The smell of damp earth and decay hung heavy in the air. The forest felt alive, not with life, but with something older, something darker.

"Peter…" she whispered into the trees, her voice swallowed almost immediately by the thick fog. She tried to shake the unease crawling up her spine. Stay focused. Find him.

The deeper she ventured into the forest, the quieter it became. Not a single bird chirped, not a single leaf rustled. The silence was oppressive, as if the very woods were holding their breath.

Hours passed. The trees grew taller and closer, their twisted branches blocking out the sky. Naomi had long since lost track of the path she was following. Every direction seemed the same, as if the forest was shifting around her.

It wasn’t until the first sound broke the silence that Naomi stopped dead in her tracks—a low, guttural growl from behind her. Her breath hitched. She turned, but the fog had thickened, blurring her vision. Nothing.

Then, the ground beneath her feet began to tremble, ever so slightly at first, like a soft tremor. Naomi froze, listening. Another growl, much closer this time, came from the darkness. She reached for the knife at her belt, but it felt like a poor defense against whatever was lurking.

The trees creaked around her, their branches bending in unnatural ways. A shadow passed through the mist, too large to be a human, too fast to be anything she recognized. She stumbled back, heart racing, every instinct telling her to run.

But then she heard it.

A voice.

It was faint at first, like a whisper, but clear enough to make her freeze.

"Naomi…" the voice called, echoing through the trees. It was Peter’s voice. Her brother. "Help me…"

Her heart surged with hope, and she pushed forward, ignoring the terror gnawing at her. “Peter!” she shouted, trying to follow the voice.

The path narrowed, the trees closing in like a tunnel. Naomi’s breaths were shallow, her eyes darting from side to side. The fog swirled in patches, and she felt a presence, a weight, pressing on her chest.

The voice called again, but this time, it was distorted. Twisted.

"Naomi… help… me…"

It was no longer her brother's voice. It was something else—something mocking, cruel. The sound of laughter followed, low and taunting.

Naomi’s pulse quickened as panic threatened to consume her. She knew she should turn back. She should leave. But something was pulling her deeper into the forest, something that knew her name, something that was waiting.

The growl came again, louder this time, closer.

And then, in the dense fog ahead, Naomi saw a figure. At first, she thought it was Peter. He was standing still, half-hidden among the trees. His head was bowed, his body unnaturally still.

“Peter?” Naomi called, her voice trembling.

The figure lifted its head slowly. Naomi’s stomach lurched. It wasn’t Peter. The face that stared back at her was pale, with hollow eyes that glowed faintly in the fog. The thing that looked like her brother grinned, its teeth sharp and jagged, far too many for a human mouth.

“Naomi…” it whispered, its voice a strange mixture of Peter’s and something darker. “Come closer.”

The thing’s hands stretched out towards her, fingers too long, too thin. And the smell—it was the smell of rot, of something dead. Naomi took a step back, her heart hammering in her chest, but the thing took a step forward, closing the distance between them.

“Peter, is that you?” she whispered, desperately clinging to the hope that this was some trick of the forest.

The creature’s grin widened, and it stepped into the dim light, revealing its full form. The skin of its face had peeled back, exposing raw, sinewy flesh beneath. Its body seemed to bend unnaturally, the bones cracking as it moved.

“Peter died a long time ago,” it hissed, its voice echoing like a dozen whispers. “And now, you’re mine.”

Naomi’s breath caught in her throat as the thing lunged at her, its long arms reaching for her.

She stumbled backward, but there was no escaping it. The ground beneath her feet was giving way. With a sickening sound, the earth split open, and Naomi fell.

She tumbled into darkness, crashing into the ground below. The impact knocked the wind out of her, but before she could move, the creature’s shadow loomed over her, towering like a nightmare.

"You're not getting out," it whispered, the words a cold promise.

The world around her blurred, and in the darkness, Naomi realized—there was no escape. The forest had claimed her, just as it had claimed Peter, and every soul foolish enough to enter. The Hollow Grove was alive, hungry, and now, it would feast on her fear.

The last thing Naomi heard was the eerie, distorted laughter of the thing that had once been her brother.
